Armatus Identification thread

You can tell the one above is an armatus from it's jaw structure and angle, the gold on the gill, the black strip behind the gill, the chunky black bit on the tail with white edge etc.

And you can tell it's not a Scomb 100% simply because it doesn't look like one and it's 18" long :D :D

JD7 - after watching a few Armatus videos today I did in fact notice that, that sometimes they do swim at a slight angle.

BTW JD7 and co, are there tell tale signs for very small Armatus? Obviously they do look different, the colouration, and they don't yet have the black bands on the tail etc.

I am asking because when I order an Armatus, it's probably going to be small. Is the adipose fin developed enough to tell at say 4 or 5 inches, or do I more have to look at the jaw structure etc? From what I can tell, small ones still have the gold gills and black strip behind it.

Small ones are easy to tell. Size of tail and the fin under the adipose will stand out as being much larger than Tats. I was able to tell this at 3 inches. Long before anyone would agree with me on the adipose. 5-6in and adipose is obvious and the white edging is very apparent.

Easiest way to tell is growth rate. No arguement there. It'll grow a few inches a month when small if it's Armatus.

To me the bleeding isnt really that obvious as it is kind of subjective and one persons idea of bleeding of color can be different then the next. I know ive said it a million times, just compare the adipose fin with the caudal fin. Also rumble, you seem to be hooked on the gold color of the body being an armatus. My tat was way more gold then my armatus.

Here are some old pics of my boy. I miss him.:( Sorry for the crappy pics, he would never keep still.:irked: Hopefully in the future i will be able to aquire one again.

The way to 100% Identify ARMATUS is by the adopise fin ARMATUS are the only one's that have a GLOWING tangerine ORANGE color. I have raised all species of Payara from 2" and up and the best way to Identify is by the adopise fin when younger. They do not get the white edge of the tail until around 12cm

Is that last pic a 20"er?

I thought you said it was around 15 in. when I talked to you about 10-11 months ago.

Any pics of that INSANE tank yet?

Looks like the glowing adipose fades with age?
