Those of you who have comms how do you handle the stress of the initial fighting?!?

I purchased 7 silver arowana today of about 3-5".

They were doing fine all day but now that the lights are off they are fighting. Its not horrible but its fairly persistent. They are in a 6'x2'x3' tank.

Should I just let the fighting run its course?Perhaps they are just establishing rank,so to speak? Some of them are biting pretty hard but I see no real damage yet, though as I mentioned the lights are off.

Am I being paranoid? This is the first night and all maybe I should give it more time before I should really worry, but how long?I know sitting there watching them probably doesn't help my stress level any, should I just leave them alone and only check on them once in awhile?

lemme know what you guys think.

I tried a comm of five before and they were great until 2 months in, then two started two started picking on one and wouldnt let it above midlevel of tank. They picked on him until it was so thin and weak I had to remove it, this process kept going on until I was left with one...... So it really depends on aros, mine were just territorial to no end.

Great to know you finally got your silvers.:)

Alright, let me share my fair bit of exprience with mine.

I feel that the bigger the tank the more space for them the better for even when fight breaks, there're enough space for them to dive. Another thing you may want to add into the tank are floating plants which can add as a decoy or hide away.

Since you mention whenever the lights are off they will fight right? Leave the lights on 24/7 for now. I leave mine 24/7. And by feeding enough they tends to get alittle lazy in fight.:D

BTW, where're the pictures?!!!:D

Yes, Senor...leave the lights on. That is one of the major themes in managing comms ( imo )...if not the tank light, put a lamp near the tank so that some degree of light shines through....

Also, increase water current inside the tank ( no need to create "rapids", ok ? )

I'll be watching your "over crowding" attentively, LOL.....( remembering past discussions )

okay well things look better, hopefully not temporarily. In the time it took me to create this thread their fighting went from persistent nasty chomps to occasional nips.By this morning they (I assume) had established a ladder of dominance and now rarely nip at one another.

About 4-5 of them accepted krill today...the others just watched.

I will try some plants at the top but all my plants are plastic and crappy looking, lol.I'm not sure about leaving the tank lights themselves on as there is a bgk in there and that would drive him nuts, but I might leave a night light on for them.

Yes Mig between you and Koji and how your beautiful setups have turned out I had to give the aro comm a try, thanks for bringing me to the dark side,lol:headbang2.

I will note though that unless my plans go totally awry I will have these guys in here for 1 year tops, then on to a much larger tank or (hopefully not) separated.

I will probably make a pic thread in the photo lounge, thats where it should go,no?

Once again I welcome you to the dark side.:D

Dun just feed them krill. You're spoiling them. Throw in floating pellets which are small enough for them to swallow, they're best train this way at this size. I will only give them other treats when they are 100% accepting pellets as their main.

As for pictures, I'm sure posting them here will help us in helping you pointing out suggestion which may benefit your setup. Not all tanks are the same.:D What may work on mine may not work on yours.

Alright I'll try to get them on something else, you figure hikari bio gold?I got the medium pellets, they looked like they might be small enough (I hope). If they aren't small enough should I just break them up?And how long should I expect it to take to get them accepting pellets?

here are the pics of the silvers and my setup:http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146323
No one can tell you when they will accept the pellets. It's all about trying them out till they finally accept them and silver at such size, they're greedy and very willing to eat.

And from the picture I seen you posted, I see potential threats which will eat your silvers up. I circled them up and hope you can remove them asap.

my juruense,my johanna, and my koi.Okay thanks for the tips.

I will keep an eye on them but I am not overly worried, they have never eaten a fish in their life and will not be able to fit the aros in their mouth for much longer.I have had some very small koi in this tank that I was growing out for my pond.I removed all but one (the one still in there) but they were in there for almost a month.
