arowana VERY skittish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Uh oh. I think your tank is cycling and you currently are experiencing an ammonia and/or nitrite spike. That would explain his increasing skittishness since landing him and why he was eating but now is not. You need to test your water and neutralize the problem if your tank is spiking.

Oh! I thought a month was enough to cycle the tank, no? It's been approx. five weeks, I think. Any immediate precautions I can take?

Nitrogen cycles are typically 4 to 6 weeks, but can go beyond 6 weeks if there's any kind of interruption.

The best thing would be a large water change and dosing with Prime or another water conditioner that neutralizes ammonia or nitrites. I would follow that up with daily water changes of 10-20%. I would also stop feeding the tank.

Moving an established filter or even some substrate from another tank would be another good solution.

But you really need to confirm the status of your water parameters. You need a test kit.

test the parameters, and if need be, do a WC

My roommate crammed the tank with an overdose of bottom pellets today! I'd asked him to feed the fish, bad idea! I did my best to remove the pellets from the sand, but if incomplete cycling is the problem, the problem is worse now.

I'll try to do a water change and get a kit tomorrow. Thanks for the advice, I'll report anything that happens.

Edit: I had lots and lots of duckweed up until a few days, but I've disposed of them, there's only a handful now. I wonder if that caused an ammonia spike...

Oh my, this is getting worse. The arowana seems to be injured today, there are two pinkish scars on one side. There were none yesterday. Paradoxically, all the other fish seem to happy. I haven't been able to get a kit today, but I got some Sera Toxivec. I'm adding it to the tank now. I'll also add some salt, does anyone know how much I should for 100 gallons?

You should test your water before adding or doing anything.
This does however sound like an ammo spike so dont try... but def do a 30% waterchange.

What type/s of filter are you running, make and model?

Again the test kit is top priority right now so get on it.
Um, try what? Salt? I'll definitely get a kit tomorrow, I've been to a few pet shops in the vicinity today, but none of them had any. I'll seek out a larger store. I'll also do the water change.

I have an Eheim 2228, with Eheim filter material and bioballs.
