i remember a few months ago a lady was caught in melbourne airport trying to smuggle in some fish, among others RTC and asian aros from singapore. she had to get rid of all the fish (im wondering where they went) and also had to do a whole heap of community service

afaik, asians were illegal. but i kno they're available, if you ask the right questions and are willing to pay megabucks

I think I know the story that your talking about. The lady got caught with 51 fsih in an apron that was specially made to smuggle the fish. All of the fish were put down. It doesn't say what type of fish they were but the picture that came with the story was of 2 pleco (no idea what variety though) They also searched her house and found another 5 fish. There was another person caught smuggling asian arowana into Australia in March.

That suggests that it could be illegal to bring them into Australia.

I went to a fish store today and they had 5 5-7 inch asian arowana for sale. All of them over AUS$2300. I talked to one of the guys who works there and he said that it's illegal to bring them into Australia.

Still, I'm going to try and find something for sure from the gov. But it's not looking good :(

It is illegal to import them into the country just as it is for species like Dovii.Every fish I own can't be imported anymore but I can legally keep those species here in QLD as long as it was bred here from existing stock..For fish you can't keep.Go by the noxious species list not the allowable import list.It is 2 different subjects.
As far as the smuggling story. She would have been arrested even if importation of said species was allowable.Smuggling is not the method used to keep quarantine happy.

There goes the poor fishes....:(

Just heard back from the "Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service". As of this moment the importing of asian arowana's is illegal in Australia. This is currently being reviewed by The Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources (formerly the Department of the Environment and Heritage) (DEW) and the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS). I'm trying to find out when the review will be finished. It looks as though the original article that I found was done for them to evaluate the impact of importing asian arowana.

This is both good and bad news. Good because it's under review with the possibility of the fish being allowed into Australia through normal quarantine channels (not smuggled) but bad because right now it is illegal to import asian arowana.

I'll be contacting DEW and AQIS to see when the review will be finished and if it has finished what the outcome is. :)

It's not all doom and gloom yet.

$2300:WHOA:
what kind of asian was it?

$2300 for a rtg.
A super red sold for $4500. Only about 6-8 inches long also.

Not sure how much they would charge for a gold (which is what I want)

Yeah, the RTG are a beautiful fish. It's the fish that kind of got me hooked on fish keeping. Just watching it swim in it's tank at the lfs. So graceful and beautiful to watch.

I was thinking of setting up a big tank towards the end of the year and getting maybe 4-5 golds and trying to breed them. But now that I know they are illegal to import I'm hesitant to even buy any from the stores since I can't garnuntee that they have been bred in Aus or smuggled in. :(

Anyway, need to wait for a response from DEW on where they are on the review.
