ATF ID...I'm confused

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are VATF typically thicker then TATF when small? My "TATF" look skinny compared to the first pics in this thread.

OR is this just an example of their builds falling back on the keepers? Some may look thicker then others due to the conditions they're kept in? Like comparing freshly imported 5"ers VS 5"ers bulked up from 3"ers in turbulent, high temp waters, being fed several times a day?

Really getting tired of feeling like I "settled" for TATF when I really wanted VATF..... :(

The VATF are soooo Purdy, yet seem so hard to find with all the F/T/V/G ATF confusion.

Interesting.

Do you have a copy of a copy of the pics that is large enough to count lateral line scales? That'll settle the issue. I've always gone out of my way to say that TATF and VATF are extremely closely related and that when small its possible to make mistakes in the ID of them.

how's this?

thanks!...naw i started lookin through stuff on here and was just curious and confused, lol..

From that big pic, I counted 49 LL scales, that places the fish firmly as a vittatus. There is some margin for error however as the rear end of the fish seems to be slightly outside of the clearly focused depth of field. If anything, I feel that its safe to say 48-50 scales, which is more than a tatf can have, so the difference is irrelevant.

Those are seriously the same fish? That is very interesting. Was the fish kept under odd lights when young or in a very dark tank? I've never seen a for-sure vittatus with a blue adipose before, that's whats really throwing me for a loop, though of course anything is possible.

Same here that's why I was confused..
