Just nudge the fish around a little bit. That'll learn him, lets see if he has the nerve to bite or attack the other fish in his overcrowded little tank after a good nudging

I am almost afraid to get involved in one of these threads. But the last one got locked just before I had something to say. I did find the time out tank idea interesting from that thread.

I have never been bitten but I do sometime use the net to push a fish, that is being particularly agresive with the other fish, to the other end of the tank.

The only time I have had Oscars come close to biting me was when I had food in my hand and it was to close to the water. I generally end up with Oscars that want to be petted and go pout in a corner if I don't acknowledge them in some way every time I pass the tank. Because of that you can't convince me that fish are dumb and don't pay attention to what is going on around them.

oh yea BTW .. i have been bitten one time .. by my RCK .. lost some blood .. i now feed with chopsticks .. but i did think about kicking his little .. umm .. tail? ..

i think people need to remember that every time you touch your fish, be it a nudge or a whack with the net, you are in fact opening the fish up to infection by stressing the fish out and removing some of its slime coat at the same time.

tbh, you picked the potentially large aggressive fish so you take all the risks associated with it.
i bet people wouldnt be so eager to go nudging or whacking an alligator gar with a net or an adult rhombeus, no they pick on the fish that cant really do any serious damage. maybe pick a fight with a semi-adult arapima gigas because it snatched a fish from your hand. or you could top it all by trying to disciplining an ATF, that should be amusing.
attempting to discipline a fish is just daft.

This is one of the things that I miss about my Oscars when I had them. They would pull on my fingers when I wiggled them in the water.Smart and interactive fish.

I've often wondered how disciplining a fish would work out. I was thinking more along the lines of tapping the glass every time they started to square off or nip another fish. I did move my Rainbow shark in with my Oscars after he attacked my bichirs. HE survived but didn't enjoy the experience much, he also didn't learn, so take that for what its worth.

I have been trying this with an oscar and gt. If I notice them flaring at each other, I'll give them a tap on the glass. If they persist, I'll stick a net or gravel vac or other object in the water (just near them, I don't touch them with it) and that does the trick. After awhile, they seem to get the message just from the tap on the glass.

Some fish like a cichlid etc might understand a small poke on the top of the head as repercussions if you do it over and over again. A fish that just takes food from your hand too fast.... Forget about teaching that thing no.

In certain cituations it could work. Depends on the fish i guess.

Ever heard of jaw locking? This is what these fish are supposed to do and you should'nt intervene.Wait till they start to actually lock onto each others jaws and pull back and forth, sit back and enjoy the show.
