auratus fry or no fry?

yes ..not usually the female but sometimes but mostly males do this.to help with issue of being eaten by parents or others in the tank {if you cannot move them..} put lots of thick plastic leaves and plants in one whole cornor for them to hide.. most will likely be eaten anyway but usually some survive if they can hide.
 
no i stripped my fry from my female and put them in a glass jar thats in the tank. theyve been growing in that jar and the all my mbuna see the fry everyday.
what im asking is if i release the fry into the open tank will they be eaten. i feel even stupider for asking this again but just wondering. they can easily fit into most of the mbunas mouths.

yes they will be eaten ..except for a few that maybe able to find a secret hiding place..
 
i think im gonna see my auratus breed. the female has her breeding tube sticking out and the male is forcing her to stay in his pit behind his rock.

why is she just resting on the sand behind the rock? the male just hovers over her and keeps checking to see if shes there. once in a while he will chase her all around the tank and then back to the resting on teh sand. how long will this keep up for?

ok theyre spawning right now. i got a quick question. theyre spawning on pool filter sand and the eggs look jsut like the sand. can the fish tell the difference?
 
can someone explain whats going on with my auratuses. about 3 weeks ago auratus #1 spawned. she was being chased around by auratus #2 a lot. now the fry are in a glass jar and theyre a pretty good size.

2 days ago auratus #2 spawned and now i have her in a net that hangs on my tank. now auratus #1 keeps trying to attack the auratus #2 through the net. revenge maybe? its odd because auratus #2 always picks on auratus #1 so maybe auratus #1 is taking advantage of the situation.

my question is why does the male keep protecting auratus #2 in the net. he chases auratus #1 away and every other cichlid that goes close to the net. he stays close to the net and acts like a watch dog. i thought males just spawn and continue to treat their mates like crap. i released her out of the net a few times and he chased her all around the tank probably expecting to breed again. but when shes in the net he acts like a watchdog.

and i got another question. im planning not to strip the fry from the mother this time because i want to see the parenting skills. the mother is about 3.5 inches. will i be able to see her release her fry and suck them back into her mouth or is she too small to do that?
 
wow thats some new info. it does make sense though. what doesnt make sense is how he violently tries to court with the holding female.
