Baby bowfin grow out thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I usually don't like giving my opinion on ethical topics of fish keeping, but you don't think 400 fry is a little excessive to take from a lake. I am sure the bowfin population will rebound and reach its carrying capacity. Just something to think about in the future.

You also need to get some better pictures, looking forward to updates. If you can't get a good picture post a video.
The 400 I got were literally 1/20 of the one school I found. There were at least 10,000 of them in that one brood. I also doubt this was the only brood of bowfin in the lake. I'll get a video.

Sorry about not getting pics yet. I've been very busy. Bowfin are doing great and I'm moving them to a 35g soon.

Nice. Now that they are aquarium raised, you cant realease them because they can spread unknown diseases. But amyways I saw online that adults sell for like $400 dude u got a money pit in your hands lol.

I'm am aware that's cant release them, just like any other fish kept in aquaria. I couldn't sell them here in North Carolina. It's illegal to sell non game species you've caught without a lisense. I technically caught them so even if I've had them for years I couldn't sell them. Maybe if I could get them to breed I could sell their offspring. I've heard breeding them has not been done in captivity but I'm going to try it, because they will be in a large pond eventually.

Sorry for not updating in a while. The bowfin are doing awesome. The biggest is about 3 inches now. They are eating bloodworms and gambusia. I will try to get some pics.

Gave all but my three biggest bowfin to a freind for his pond. I moved the three to a 60 gallon. They are almost 4 inches. I haven't been able to take pictures because I've been tied up with football. Fed them cut sunfish today for the first time. Supposedly it's a bowfin favorite. They seemed to like it. again, I will TRY to post pics.
