Is yours from BW or a different vendor? If BW I'd trust what Oliver says about collection point that he got it from. I am a newb with wolves so I don't know all of their collection points except there is a VZ, Suriname, and red tapajos variant, but there are even more than that.

I'll take pics of mine so we can compare. I'm moving so I don't have decent lights in the tank for now. I will say the color changes drastically with the environment. In his 180g with black bottom and black background he's very dark and patterns are harder to see. When he was in the 40g hospital tank with no background and bare bottom he was very light and patterns were striking.
No mine are not from below water. i just asked him some questions on his face book page about the different variants back when i got them , because he had some on his list that i get every few months and i knew he would be a good person to talk to about them .

BW has been around for years. Oliver used to be the prime importer for a lot of zoos and public aquariums. Him and Wes have been around for years and have made many of our dreams come true 
better camera lens should have maybe cleaned the glass first but just wanted to tr and show some more pics of my two beastly buddies really wish i could keep them both but i have my fav picked ..... i think lol

I think you can keep both with some brycron. But I still thin vz variant. They sure are gorgeous fish
guess i didn't secure the divider well enough after taking pics last night
