Back at it.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd get Delhezi or Senegal. Well and I like your rope idea of course but I think you're saying the ropes will go in the larger tank to start? Or no?

I think the Buettekoferi are reported to generally be shy so not sure it'd be the best bet to go with potentially aggressive cichlids. I'd go with a more outgoing species for that. If they had Polli on the list I'd recommend one of those for sure. Palmas would probably work, and they have TR ones. I feel like WC fish are more likely to be shy than TR as a general rule...

Excited for you to get going!!

Yes, ropes will go into the large tank once I aquire one. No cichlid will. Basically want to start with ropes, 1 del, and toss a couple peacocks in to throw my dad a bone. Sounds like a huge load for a 40 gallon but this will act like a growout and I have mega filtration. Now to decide on the cichlid.

Del is my fav for sure. I'd like to get a big wild fatty del from your guy one day. Too funny that he's right down the road from me and I can't buy from him.

who is down the road?

No on tropheus. 1 they are some of the worst African cichlids for plant eating as algae/plants are the majority of their diet. 2 polys and ropes need lots of protein and that is bad for tropheus, mbuna.
If you are trying for plants in the 40b I'd stay clear of any African cichlid really. But Africans that are meat eaters are haplichromis and aulonocara or peacocks are going to be best with the polys/ropes, as far as all of them being carnivores. This doesn't mean they still won't destroy your plants.
Watch for agression toward your polys as I've seen eyes removed from polys by African cichlids. I've bred Africans when I was younger. I had to use a little bit of Google to insure my memory was correct as far as diet, as the last African I had was when I was 18 I turn 45 in a few days so......
Sorry my first post to your come back is laden with bad news.
Glad you are back though!

Poly list
Nile Bichir Polypterus bichir bichir Extra Large (3"+ to 5") TR $110.00
Striped Bichir Polypterus bichir lapradei "Koliba" Extra Large (3"+ to 5") TR $35.00

A little off topic but bloody hell: $110 and $35 a pop for a PBB and koliba is a steal assuming they're WC. Still good deals even if they're CB. Kolibas are going for around $200 in Singapore and PBBs, well upwards of $500. Any idea whether they're WC/CB?

Both of them are CB. Actually Wetspot was one of a few places to first get CB PBB in the US. However i can say the PBB still look pretty stunning mine was beautiful before she decided to kill herself.

P.S. its the one in my avatar.

Tropheus are awesome fish, but I agree with twentyleagues, if you want to keep them in a planted setup with polypterus you are better off with carnivorous species. The tropheus are very susceptible to bloat if they get too much protein (or any meaty food at all really). They also would require a larger tank than a 40 breeder, though the 40 would last a while if you bought babies.

jwd jwd , what’s the pH of your water? Don’t African cichlids need a higher pH around 7.8? However, I haven’t really kept Africans so....all I know is Dads love African cichlids.

I agree with twentyleagues twentyleagues that this might be an issue with the cichlids eating the plants.
