jwd jwd , what’s the pH of your water? Don’t African cichlids need a higher pH around 7.8? However, I haven’t really kept Africans so....all I know is Dads love African cichlids.

I agree with twentyleagues twentyleagues that this might be an issue with the cichlids eating the plants.

+1
They do but as the normal answer goes stability is better then chasing a particular number. If the water is soft and can't hold a decent ph the use of "cichlid gravel" could be implemented.

STILL cycling this little 40 gallon. My nitrites won't budge! Being patient..

Seems like the ammonia has been gone for weeks. I keep dosing here and there.

I was watching a king of diy video the other day and he suggested cycling by throwing a piece of shrimp in the tank to decompose instead of adding ammonia and I was surprised at how much sense that made

yeah I saw that too. I've never had a cycle take this long. The ammonia method I use works like a charm every time. Couple weeks faster.

Grab a small bottle of safestart and some giant danios.

Funny you say that. Almost 2 weeks ago I tossed in an entire bottle of https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/microbe-lift-special-blend-aquarium-bacteria
lets just say that's probably why I'm suffering with a nitrite stall. Nitrites are sky high and haven't budged.

Today is day 29 of the cycle btw. Normally I'd be at the end of the cycle.

Yeah, id say you may have messed up your cycle by dumping in that whole bottle. You may have to try to restart. I'm not exactly sure whats in the kickstart but i know a lot of them use ammonia and if you get too much of that it may be killing the nitrifying bacteria. I've heard you really have to try to by exact on this because a lot of people mess up cycle using ammonia by using too much and causing more harm then help. I'm completely speculating here but it seems it had to have thrown something off

Totally possible. I went to my LFS today and got some gravel from one of their tanks. That should do it! I know my the first stage of bacteria are still kicking because when I dose ammonia it's gone pretty quick. This addition of matured gravel is going to do the trick I bet.

Also, they have 3 HUGE ropefish and for $12.99 at that.
