Not unfair at all. What is unfair is buying large fish for small tanks on the thought you will upgrade at some point in the future. Saw it weekly when worked at a LFS in high school and people would come in trying to give us a Pacu or Oscar (those were most popular) because all those plans they had to upgrade just did not work out.

Since you asked I will just use a "lil percentage" of my brain from now on just to make our intelligence equal.

so you are then assuming that all plans aint going to push thru? damn! you're talking nonsense.. perhaps that's what you get when working in a LFS .:naughty:

ID sharks are slow growers? I thought they'd be fast, like RTCs
I thought that they are too and I still think most are. Maybe mine has just hit a slow spot in growing? I dunno. He did have a little spurt a few months ago and gained about an inch. I hope that he's stunted from before I got him. My little ones are doing great and growing fast. Though my RTC is beating them right now with his growth spurt. Just added another 2-3 inches on him.:nilly:

That's a paroon shark, not an ID.

Why not go with a school of filament barbs? They get around 7 inches are constantly on the move and will breed pretty easy for you. You could do 5-6 easily and maybe a decent size pleco or catfish. The male filament barb gets a cool looking green sheen when in breeding dress.

no balas balls get to be 14inches and they need a school minuium tank size is around 240+

Wouldnt it be funny to have to udgrade your tank, not because your fish itself had outgrown it, but because it balls had outgrown it. :WHOA:Id pay to see it though, is that wierd?

go with an oscar and a couple of silver dollars. that makes a pretty amazon set up and the o has a good chance of getting to a foot or more

ID sharks are really fast growers, but they seem to be more likely to be stunted than other fish in similar conditions, which is why there are a few reports here of them only growing to such-and-such size in such-and-such time. If your ID shark doesn't grow like a weed, you're doing it wrong. And I don't recommend an ID shark to the OP. They can freak out and hit the tank with about the same force as a Pacu of comparable size. Balas can also get pretty big and will also easily freak out, but if you really like them, I think four at the most.

It is best to assume so. Very few times do you hear about plans to house monster fish going through. Most of the time, you have people saying they will upgrade, and then stuff comes up (money troubles, family issues, space issues, etc) and stuff doesn't get built. Plus, adult ID sharks don't have a good resale value. Meaning, you can grow a clown loach or a dat to a large size, and sell it for a good amount, but no one is gonna buy your 2' ID shark when it gets too big. Even if you think your plans will go through... why not build that pond/monster tank NOW, rather than hope you'll be able to build it later? I mean, you're planning to keep the fish, so what's the harm? If you couldn't drop what you are doing, at this moment, and go out and buy all the supplies you'd need to get your build started, then you shouldn't also go out and buy said fish.
