ID sharks are really fast growers, but they seem to be more likely to be stunted than other fish in similar conditions, which is why there are a few reports here of them only growing to such-and-such size in such-and-such time. If your ID shark doesn't grow like a weed, you're doing it wrong. And I don't recommend an ID shark to the OP. They can freak out and hit the tank with about the same force as a Pacu of comparable size. Balas can also get pretty big and will also easily freak out, but if you really like them, I think four at the most.

so you are then assuming that all plans aint going to push thru? damn! you're talking nonsense.. perhaps that's what you get when working in a LFS .
It is best to assume so. Very few times do you hear about plans to house monster fish going through. Most of the time, you have people saying they will upgrade, and then stuff comes up (money troubles, family issues, space issues, etc) and stuff doesn't get built. Plus, adult ID sharks don't have a good resale value. Meaning, you can grow a clown loach or a dat to a large size, and sell it for a good amount, but no one is gonna buy your 2' ID shark when it gets too big. Even if you think your plans will go through... why not build that pond/monster tank NOW, rather than hope you'll be able to build it later? I mean, you're planning to keep the fish, so what's the harm? If you couldn't drop what you are doing, at this moment, and go out and buy all the supplies you'd need to get your build started, then you shouldn't also go out and buy said fish.
