  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
please please pleasee help me! im getting a 55 gallon tank soon. ive been looking at freshwater barracuda, either red tails or hook nose i think?(acetrorhynchus falcirotoris is their latin name) but will 2 fit in a 55 gallon? i have no problem ordering smaller of the species (my ma and pop pet store orders all) but if not 2 in a 55 gallon then what other aggressive fish could i put in there for a few years until i save up for a 75-150 gallon tank, and if im going to need to upgrade please give me a guesstimate of how long i will be able to wait or what size they will be, and also how large the tank will need to be.

I pmed you back But here is my take incase anyone uses the search function in the future and wants to know.

There are 2 that I know of that stay at around 4-5" max for life.

They are
Acestrorhynchus isalinae
Acestrorhynchus minimus

I have owned both and they would make awesome 55g lifers. I kept the minimus for 1.5yrs and they never made it past 3.5". But they say they can hit 4-5".

I think if they were the main fish in the tank you could probably keep 8-12 of them with no problems. As long as you have good filtration and do weekly maintenance/water changes as well as have a well decorated tank.

Also I would keep a small school of cory cats in there as well to help keep the bottom cleaner and make the cuda's feel safer. A small school of larger colorful tetra's make good (safe) tank mates. Anything larger than 1/3rd-1/2 there size will not be looked at as food.

That was the Easy part.

But the hard part will be finding etheir of these for sale. It took me 6-8yrs to find these dwarf's of the cuda world for sale.

Good luck

Hey hybridtheoryd16 remember when I had that fin rot fiasco? Well I think its back, i did a water change, but it didn't look any better. I've got some Maracyn (1+2) and I'm getting another hospital in like 2 days, will he survive? and should i be doing like 25% water changes daily? Again you are the only one with the straightest and quickest replies. Thanks again

I have some questions so maybe we can get to the bottom of why it is reoccuring.
  1. Tank temp?
  2. Tank size?
  3. All fish in tank and numbers of each?
  4. Filtration used?
Daily water changes allways help heal fish. And putting the temp to around 83-84 for your size fish would be a good idea. And salt is also a good idea as it helps with healing wounds by promoting slime coat production as well as it has a calming effect on fish. From what I have read.

I would try to heal them up with out the meds at first. Meds have a very good place in the cuda's life. But moving them to a new hospital tank is stressful for them and stress breeds disease so its a last resort for me. If its no worse than the pics you showed before its no biggie at that point. IMO Just salt, raise temp and do more water changes.

1. 78-79F
2. 75G
3. 2 Plecostamus, 9 Ghost Shrimp, 2 Crayfish, 2 Barracudas
4. Fluval 404

I've been doing ~20-30% water changes every 2-5 days and putting salt. It looks to be clearing up again, but i would really like to stop it from reoccurring.
