4. Fluval 404

I've been doing ~20-30% water changes every 2-5 days and putting salt. It looks to be clearing up again, but i would really like to stop it from reoccurring.

The possibillities are

The temp is a little low. I would bump that up to 82 for sub adult sized fish over 6". And 85 for cuda's under that.

And it may be possible that the crays are causing some stress. Because they are predators and jump at any chance they get to grasp a fish for a snack. Although I do have 2 5" blue crays in my payara tank. But if I could catch them with out dismantling the tank I surely would because i have seen a claw mark on one of my scombs.

And the filtration is some what low. The fluval 404 puts out 317gph loaded with clean media and goes down from there as it gets dirty. So at its peak effciency you have about 4 turn overs per hour. And since cuda's like current I allways try to aim for atleast 10x turn over rates with my predatory characins. I would suggest adding a Aquaclear 110 HOB style filter to the mix. Because they are fairly cheap, as you can find people on here and ebay selling used ones for 40-50 bucks all the time. And because they are cleaning monsters and there media is cleanable. So there's no cartridges to buy ever.

I would bump the temp first and then work on the filtration and see what happens from there. And just keep a eye on the crays for any aggressive behaviour towards the cuda.

Hope that helps

Great answer as always! Thanks man! The crays just usually pick up the scraps and whatever nutrition there is left in the poo. They never attack the cudas, but i have seen them demolish balas and such. I'll definitely look into getting a 110 too.

Thanks again.

No problem at all

Great information. I still have not found any Cuda's local to buy, and will be thinking about ordering them cyber in the next few weeks.

Next we should make a thread with only pics from everybody that owns FW Barracuda. :D  :D Good luck abid222.

Thanks for all the experienced information

Good news for you - I bought a few myself from That fish and they are true Falcatus - small - but showing lots of deep reds

dont forget the spotted cachorro species i own a yellow tail i trained mine to take silversides by throwing them into the tank quickley and putting them in front of the powerhead he likes to hang with my needlenosed gar near the surface of the tank try to get all the cudas somewat away from each other when tossing in silversides to avoid fighting since mine will try to strike my gar to get him to spit out the silverside

yellowtail cuda killed the needlenose a couple mounths ago but gets along fine with my 2 new baby armatus all of them are on silversides and massivore pellets i have an altus on order with my lfs so i will get one of those soon

melafix kills this tail rot dead. treated payara and aces works everytime with a 25% water change and salt. only takes a few days to clear up.
