Beani Gold Rush

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looking good. The funny thing about these cichlids (and the haitiensus for that matter) is they are the only cichlids endemic in their area and habitat. Either they were simply the only cichlid in the area, or they found evolutionary success by ridding the area of any and all cichlid competition (my guess is the later). This seems to be why they can kill any other cichlid put in a tank with them, or die trying.

I find this with many North American cichlids, they just don't play well with others of another species.

Thanks Duanes! I see what you mean by these cichlids being endemic in their area...I took new pictures of a new male beani I have and I think im starting to notice a nuchal hump developing on him like that of your male...can you verify?

What an absolute beast!!! Keep the pics coming man...hey remember that beani in my first post on this thread that you mentioned was your favorite and that looked similar to yours as a juvy? Well he has been so cool and interactive lately I gave him his own 40b and he is looking insane! Ill post pics...

Whatever happened to you man and your awesome beani!?
Had to revive this thread to see updated pictures of your beast!

I switched over to the tuxedo cichlids, their cousin the barton
I do miss the honey comb colors,

Any members feel free to post some pics of your beani, see if there is a competitor for Styles's glass banging Beani

Big shout out and thank you to Duanes for providing all his helpful information here on this thread

Oh my...what a sight to behold!
Stunning pair, and you said 18months old...how is that even possible at that size!?
Great job on raising them, so they were kept in a pond until now? Aggression level?
Fed low protein diet im assuming in cold temperatures but Amazing growth rate

If you scroll up to the top of the page and see my old female (whom was killed by the male that got through the divider) she would have looked very similar to yours with the black bars ;)

Your male might be the next up and comer in looked compared to Styles
His beast is beyond aggressive, would glass bang at a pitbull..ya he would go at the most aggressive dog lol they would have battles against each other

To clarify about the age, I've had them for about 18 months. They were already ~2" when I got them, so they're probably closer to two years of age. They have been out in the pond twice, this year and last for around 4-5 months each time. They were/are kept inside over the winter. The aggression level in the pond was low since they had plenty of room to roam. Here's the male.

Agreed, beautiful
Is he interactive? Seems that tank raised Beani, like that of Style's, are more interactive than those who are raised more naturally in a pond.
He is stunning either way
