Beani Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i didnt really ever plan on adding anything to the tank ever other than what was originally in the tank with him when i started the tank up. he was just getting overly aggressive (i know they are super aggressive anyways) and a few years back before i shut down all my tanks, i had a school of silver dollars and my 15 inch midas chased them around instead of the other cichlids, so i decided to try it again with the beani.

i am already treating the whole tank with the general cure. i did my second dose this morning, and will be doing a 30% water change tuesday night.

should i switch to clout after that??

ive never really been a big user of medication, which is why i didnt treat it the first time i seen the white poo. i just up my water changes and it goes away. i normally do 35-40% water changes every 1-1.5 weeks

Bloat is the major downfall to such a great fish. Much respect for giving it a shot with them. I hope he comes out of this ok

I think the goal with the general cure is to get him eating, then the Epsom salt in his food should clear him out. Clout is kind of a last resort IMO, can either be very effective or kill the fish.

I agree. Finish the API General Cure treatment, perform a large water change, and withold food during the entire time. Give the meds some time to work, and him some time to deal with his gastrointestinal issues, then slowly introduce epsom soaked pellets. IMO Clout is a rather harsh med that should only be used as a last resort.

ok cool thanks alot guys.

so should i get some epsom salts and put them into the water tomorrow? or wait until the general cure treatment is done?
from what i've read, for high risk situations i should use 1 tbsp for every 5 gallons of water??

and dont feed the fish at all until everything is all good? (i have faith he will be all good.)
should i leave the lights on like normal? or leave them off? should i add another air pump for more aeration? is it ok to crank the temp around 86 degrees during this period?

any added info to help out would be great.

Personally I would leave everything as is, lights, temp, etc.

You can add epsom salt to the water at any time, it will simply act as a mild purgitive/laxative. For the next few days feed nothing. Later in the week try a few 3% epsom soaked pellets, as once he gets that into his gut it will eradicate any remaining parasites & clean him out thoroughly. Do not offer any mysis during this period as you want him to only eat the epsom soaked pellets. After 3-5 days of epsom soaked pellets he should be back to 100%. Here's a direct link to the epsom salt treatment.

Good luck.

Tough one at this point but I have treated bloat or more accurately Hexamita Intestinalis by using metronidazole. Now metro is not very soluble and is not easily absorbed by fish so what I do is use a infants plastic medicine hypodermic needle-like applicator to inject the meds directly into the stomach via the mouth. Usually this will work. I would keep this fish 100% by itself, any type of stress on a beani IME brings bad results. I plan on keeping mine separate going forward. Clout is also a good option along with epsom salts. You can add some epsom salt with some metro powder along with a injector full of water. Good luck!
