Beardies smelling

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Something else no one brought up, is that there is a bacteria called coccidea that is naturally present in the gut of bearded dragons. Usually, the dragon's immune system keeps the population of bacteria in check and is never a problem. However, bearded dragons that are immunodeficient for whatever reason, sickness, poor husbandry, poor diet, etc, can have flare-ups of this bacteria and a smelly stool is one symptom of this.

If you clean regularly and still encounter this smell, I would take the dragon to a herp vet and have a fecal analysis done, with a specific test of the level of coccidea present.

sand isnt the best for beardies, that is why i swithched to repti carpet, also when it gets a bit smelly, you just take it and wash it on cold with no soap, and let it air dry

God, reptile carpet....

anything that comes out of our rears smells bad. When was the last time anyone pooped and it smelled like vanilla? c'mon guys some of these topics are just a waste of bandwidth, if it smells and you dont like it clean it ! If the smell doesnt bother you clean it every year. Its all a matter of what bothers you and using common sense.

True. But then theres the hygiene matter. IMO Animals living quarters should be cleaned (thoroughly) at least twice a year. They have to live in it for the rest of their lives, and can't move out of it so we should make it un-smelly and hygienic IMO

I flushed my toilet last month. That's okay isn't it?

Different animals, and individuals, produce different amounts and some are smellier/runnier than others. CLEAN IT WHEN ITS DIRTY. Thats all there is to it. Sure, there are bacteria. I dont even want to know what comes outta my rear. But if these bacteria were so dangerous, we wouldnt be alive. They can easily be booted out by a healthy immune system, which is so rare these days, and always has been due to ignorant keepers whose animals are wishing they were dead.

Maybe your animals are part of that number loconorc? I would be if my home was only being washed (if you wash the enclosure aswell as changing the sand) once a year..

Anyway just because animals can be subjected to this, doesn't mean they should. And it certainly doesnt mean you should keep them on the same sand for a whole year whether your s**t picking or not..
