If I gate the pump down just a little bit it works but will this be hard on the pump?

tee off the the pump return back to through the filter. put the gate on that

So almost like double filter the water? Interesting, I thought about running another overflow but I really don't want to drill the tank again.

yeah its like double filtering the water with the hope of using the max of the pump but not plastering your fish against the side of the tank
