It looks female to me, it's hard to see, but under certain light does it look like there is splotches of blue that are painted around the gill plates? If so, it's female. Nice fish either way.

Funny, I was gonna say male. Besides venting which is the only 100% way, I look at the gill plates and if the whole gill plate is covered with speckles is usually female. Less on the gill plate usually male

Every female I've seen has blue splotches on the Gill plates, like someone painted their face with a brush. Some males will have some spangles on the face, but not the splotches.

hmm now im definatly confused my convict which i know is female always follow the jd around shes had eggs three times could of been another fish but it was always them two by each swimming next to each where ever jd when he/she was pacing tank convict was right behind they only got into when convict had eggs they lip locked so in fear for lil o' convicts life jds way bigger and boy that mouth really opens she lock her two lil lips on just the edge of the mouth i thought i even seen lip marks on her forhead like she got to close so i used tank divider because well ofc petco dont tell you oh hey convicts are the rabbits of the fish world you may need another tank!
My female Convict I have now spawned with her sister. They guarded the eggs and everything. Right now I have 5 Cutteri x Convict that are all female, but they lay eggs and guard them. As for the Dempsey, I can see what appears to be splotches of blue in the gill plates down into the chin, which is why I say female.

Tough to tell on that one, I would guess female on that one as well. But I can't be sure on it as it's still pretty small.
