Well I know one of the reasons behind this is they don't buy their SA's in bulk at all. It is always one at a time vs the other lfs' that buy them wholesale and have a tank full.

Congressional Aquarium has been around for a long time by catering to the high end of the market.

The store is in a relatively high end area...is clean and attractive...in an area that hasn't been hit as hard by the recession as other areas. It's one of the very few fish stores that my wife will go into without complaint about smell, creepy people, etc.

Congressional also has pretty good coupons via their email list, mail, etc.

Matt

PS If you're in the DC area you should check out the Capital Cichlid Association (www.capitalcichlids.org). People regularly give away (or nearly) big fish and there's a monthly auction at meetings.

It is crazy to see all these price variations for the same fish. True, the higher the dollar amount will hopefully land the fish with a more responsible owner, however this is just one example of the outrageous prices the store has. They are not overcharging for the sake of the fish. ALL of their stock is pretty ridiculous. The 4" SA is what stood out to me the most, so that is why I posted it. Even their prices on accessories are crazy.

It's not crazy at all. Different regions, different suppliers, supply and demand, overhead, buying power, et al all pay a role in the outcome.

Is the store doing well?

The most overpriced store in my city is a Petland. They are growing and building new stores across the country and the price structure is part of the franchise agreement. It's the guys who think they're going to make a living selling feeders for two cents a piece who don't last a year.

If you can't afford it, just move on. It's always the cheapo guys that cry all the time.

Excuse you but I am already fully stocked running 4 tanks, one consisting of a 16in SA. I am not even looking for another. Read all the postings before you make accusations. This was just an observation I made. Many people found this information interesting and helpful hence the number of views and postings. Just because you personally do not know where to obtain fish at a decent price or are too terrified to leave your suburban district, doesn't give you the right to flame the smart shoppers. Do not blame your ignorance on us and if you did not enjoy or benefit from the information provided in this thread then YOU just move on!

And FYI, you may not know this since you are brand spanking new here but this is a friendly forum. If you wanna be an arse you can take your negativity elsewhere!:irked:

I've seen that price around here on a 6 incher... and it's fairly normal here (although prices drop greatly in the spring). I got mine for 40 or 50 bucks though.

I think that's a great price. Wish that was the minimum any around was to be sold at. At least this would help keep lots of people from buying who shouldn't be owning.

Disagree. The informed buyers will not pay this much for a silver aro. The misinformed buyers, however, will... thinking it's some sort of exotic and this will lead to a disaster like a 12" oscar in a 10 gal as previously mentioned. This store is likely making the majority of its sales through custom tanks and high end customers. We have a store like that here in Houston. Fish Gallery is a great place and the setups are awesome. The fish are crazily overpriced. But, it seems to work for them... although they're moving to a cheaper location. LOL

You won't see many twelve year old kids buying an arowana at $129.00, then riding home wtih it on their BMX bike and throwing it in their 10 gallon tank. More likely to see this happen with a $10 price tag though.
