Best Beginner Monster?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
TO BAD YOU ARENT GOING BIGGER OR I WOULD SUGGEST CLOWN KNIVES BUT WITH WHAT YOU ARE PLANNING I WOULD SAY CONVICTS ARE A SAFE BET

go with upper jaw polys... like sens, dels, etc.

+ 2 to Senegal Bichirs .. I love my 2.. they are unique and have quite abit of personality. They are also about bullet proof ime. a 40 Breeder should house a single or pair comfortably ( assumeing you are getting captive breed and not wild caught specimins). They are also fairly compatable w/ other species to large to eat. Peacock eels, or Zig zags would also be a nice idea again a 40 breeder would be sufficent to keep these interesting fish. They do require abit more care in reguards to set-up and feeding then the Sens But are an interesting oddball fish. a single one can be housed well w/ non-aggressive med-sized species of other tropicals.

also do a forum search for the "end all mini-monster" thread.. it's a nice list of species ideal for 55 gallon - tanks..

Tank size wise.. a 40 breeder imo is likely your best size tank to look at.. as 55's are narrow/long tanks where a 40's footprint ( base size ) is larger and can comfortably house many species that max in the 12" range. The tank may cost abit more but ime you get alot more "bang for your buck" and fish options if you don't want to go to a 75.

Oscars are wonderful and I love my 2.. but I agree a 75 is a minimum size for these guys full grown, and a need for heavy filtration, and dedicated water changes a must.

Delhezi Bichir, Yoyo Loaches, a bristlenose pleco or other smaller growing pleco and a Blue eyed cichlid (archocentrus spilurus) would be a very cool 55 in my opinion.

I would also avoid an oscar unless you had a minimum 75.

for a tank of that size, your best bet is to probably go for small to medium sized cichlids. They are fun to watch specially when caring for their brood and they have tons of attitude.

I would suggest any of the following:
1 Jack dempsey
1 female Green Terror if your getting a 60G
Pair of Archocentrus Centrarchus (flier cichlid) (and maybe a few dithers? not sure)
Pair of convict cichlid and a few dithers
Pair of Cryptoheros Sajica and a few dithers
Other medium sized cichlids such as Spiny Cichlid, Blue Acara, Honduran Red Point, Amatitlania Kanna etc, etc

What can I put in a setup with a Senegal Bichir or two?

Also what are some tankmates for Convicts (if any, since they're Cichlids).
