Best catfish bait

^^ dreams does usually catch several cats every time he goes out the big ones aren't every time but i rarely see a report of him going and catching anything less than at least a few 5lb channels so the numbers game doesnt really apply
 
What works for me are toads frogs and minnows I catch with my seine. Cut up sunnies work great too. Worms always catch little cats. Never caught a cat with prepared bait. These are just my experiences.

i dont carry a camera and i dont have to prove to a bunch of lowlife wannabees the fish i catch on an internet forum i gave my opionion on the bait that works for me if you dont like it thats your own fault and ncfisher what do you go out and hold his hand when he is fishing and count his fish cause the pics he post could be from last year or whenever

In my home state, live gamefish are not allowed to use as bait (sunfish are classified gamefish). Smelts must be proven that it is VHS-free. Also there is a size limit on bullhead for bait as it must be 10" or less but also prohibited in some countries of the state. I used dead smelts or hooligans to catching some big channel catfish (these catfish are not excatly common in my areas and can be found in two rivers). Lot of catfish fishing are at Red Rivers and the southern part of Minnesota. That said I caught my 12lber channel catfish on preserved chicken liver but I caught lots of 8lbers on nightcrawlers that is intended for walleyes in same spot.

I'm a huge catfishermen and have tried them all...BUT the best bait for BIG catfish hands down is ALWAYS Fresh cut bait like shade, carp, blue gill or bonker. The only other bait I use is a mixture I make up with pieces of fresh cut baits I already noted and I put them in a container add some water and 4 to 5 mac N cheese, powered cheese packets, table spoon of garlic and cut up pieces of pike mackerel for their fishy oil... Mix all up and place in the fridge over night and it's ready to go... I have caught 100's of catfish on this with my biggest channel cat being 37 pounds here in Colorado where catfishing isn't even that good becuz of our cold waters..
 
Live/Cut baits are obviously going to produce larger fish. If you are fishing with a live sucker or sunfish, only larger cats can take them down, its pretty simple logic. That isn't to say that large catfish won't ever take liver or night crawlers it's just that the smaller cats that have to rely on their speed will get there first.

On another note, sunfish and shad are not available to everyone. In Minnesota and North Dakota you cannot use any Gamefish as bait - cut, dead, found on the side of the road or otherwise so we need to explore other options... like chicken livers or shrimp - or our cut/live bait would most likely be a large sucker minnow.

:D No need to get hurt feelings over the subject. We all love fishing. :D .... and some of us apparently like holding hands too. ;)
