Best Cichlid for 55 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i don't want firemouths, they don't act like oscars :( im looking for fish that have a personality kinda like an oscar

i didnt think that you could put soutb american cichlids in with african ones, i tohught the water would have to be at different ph levels and temperature

why not just get an oscar then? if you just have the one then im sure youd be fine so long as you dont have many decorations in there so they have room to swim, ive seen people keep 2 oscars together in a 55 and the seemed happy, just be weary of your heater and maybe even your tank being broken, oscars startle easily and when they do they dart into things and swim frantically, could cause damage. but dont think theres any major problems with keeping one with another fish so long as the other fish isnt as big as the oscar.

i wanted an oscar but many many people have told me that 55 is simply not enough for an oscar :P

I don't see anything wrong with keeping an oscar by himself in a 55. Contrary to what people on here may say. If the the tank is 48" x 18" there is plenty of room for 1 14" fish by himself as long as you're willing to filter it and change the water properly ( atleast 2 50% wc's/ week). They are not exactly the most active fish like an arowana

55 galons is ample amount of space for one tiger oscar, proving that the tank has some depth to it aswell, oscars are graceful slow swimmers and only swim fast when startled or to feed, it would also be easier to train it to hand feed, if you get one from a small size then i strongly reccomend getting either a cave or plant pot of some sort as they like hiding places when theyre young, but make sure it has no sharp edges and never stack your decorations such as rocks, cause itll just knock them over if startled, when small theyre dosile and timid but will become more aggressive as they grow, the are awesome fish to keep and have so much character about them.
