Since the JD is shy I think I'll go with the tree terror. I was thinking more like plecos and catfish for tankmates

One of the reasons JDs seem to be shy when alone, is that in nature they are surrounded by live bearers that they watch to determine threats.
And they have giant caves to dash into when threat is eminent.
Often there are 100 mollies, or gambusia for every 1 JD.

While I agree Paratilapia are some of the best cichlids, they do get too large for a 50 gal. If you get a juvie, a 50 gal might last a year.
And since we are in the Central American section, it may be worth bringing up that they are Madagascan.
