best food for cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i say all of the above. just feeding one pellet can lead to unhealthiness. switching them around and creating variety i notice brightens up my fish, and also seems to makes them more active

i feed hikari gold, staple, and cichlid plus, grand sumo, new life spectrum, and chingmix
and as treats frozen blood worms and krill

would u like to eat mc donalds every day?

that last mc donalds line makes me cringe yuck. lol

I'll tell you what makes me cringe. It's people who compare fish to humans. I have a secret to share with you that nobody knows. Fish are not humans and don't care if they eat the same thing every day. Wow! What a revalation. Shhhhh, keep it quiet though, let everyone else keep thinking fish and humans are exactly the same. :screwy:

Oh yeah and NLS isn't the equivalant of McDonalds either.

:nutkick:

Just messing with you, man. I'm just an NLS fan and like some people are Steelers or Eagles fans lol.

BUT, here's where you're wrong....I don't know about YOUR fish, who probably have the same bland food day after day, but ALL of my fish, even my lowly goldfish, have a decided food preferance. I have not one, but 2 brands of goldfish food. Plus different treats that are healthy for color and digestion. and I find that my fish eat much more heartily when I swtich randomly between foods. Also, when I supplement with freeze dried gammarus shrimp and freeze dried bloodworms. I find they like the gammarus much more. Plus it's roughage for their bellies, so it's good for them.

That's like saying the fish have no feelings. Which is still quite lame thinking.

Everything has tastebuds, everything likes a little variety now and then, and besides, if you only feed one brand, it may not have EVERYTHING your fish needs to be truly healthy and happy. And a happy fish, is a brilliantly colored specimen that will give you YEARS of enjoyment. And if fish are not truly sentient beings with different tastes, why do they have individual personalities? Or, do you not notice these subtle differences while you are feeding the same bland flake or pellet every single day?

I'm not flaming anybody, I'm stating a valid point. And as for which food is the best, I have only JUST gotten back into having cichlids again, the last of which were convicts in a community tank, and I was roughly 8 at the time, and don't remember what my sisters fed our fish....

Variety is a MUST though!!

understandable. i used to only feed one food too. don't knock it tll u try it, once u start switching them up the colors will come out and ur fish will be more healthier. when u spend more then 100bucks on a fish u wanna make it happy and as healthy as can be. i was just making a comparison to our health
well gl raising ur fish

just messing with you man. i just don't like football

Hey I know where you guys are coming from and I believe that fish need variety too. I feed lots of different frozen foods for variety. They get brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworms, spirulina cubes for their veggies and another frozen cube called Emerald Entree (more veggie matter) plus live earthworms, crickets and june bugs.

But when it comes to pellets, they won't eat anything else. They're addicted to NLS like Britney Spears is addicted to Cocaine. I swear I used to feed Hikari and Dainichi and lots of other stuff for the most variety. THEY JUST WON'T TOUCH IT ANYMORE. After being on NLS, they would rather starve than eat another kind of pellet.

So you tell me what's going on here then. If fish have tastebuds and think eating the same thing every day is bland, why won't they eat other pellets? They have a choice and choose New Life Spectrum and eat it happily every single day. They all come to the top very excited at feeding time too btw. I've wasted a lot of money buying dozens of different kinds of foods trying to get them to switch or get variety but to no avail. You guys talk like you're the experts so please explain what I'm doing wrong. I've only been keepin cichlids for 11 years so I not too experienced. And one last thing, my fish never colored up like they are now before NLS.

How about this? I challenge you to use NLS exclusively for 30 days. Don't feed anything else...just NLS. I bet your fish are healthier, more colorful and vibrant than they have EVER been in their life. They make food for almost every kind of fish too. Pellets of different sizes, sinking or floating, flakes, algae wafers, etc. you need it, they got it.
