Green Terror or Carpinte Escondido.
True...
My GT was more of a bully, my Texas always tried to bite me through the glass. He nipped me a few times, but I can take it from him. I do not like getting bit/rammed by my RD. :grinno:
He'll rush me from the other side of the tank & head but me on the arm or sneak up ninja style & take a bite or 2.
:WHOA:

Found a guy with a good sized midas for sale (or trade, whatever) on CL...think I might pull the trigger on that. Think I'd regret not bein able to grow one out? I'd probably have to order one from a LFS, but then at least I could raise it up and know what it's been through.

At this point, a midas seems like it is a better wet pet than a red devil, and just as aggressive, so that is prolly what I'll look into getting. Unless I'm wrong, you all would know better than me from experience.

Thoughts on grown vs. young gun & red devil vs. midas?

I got mine full grown. i don't regret not growing him out. he's got the best personality in the world. i got him for free, from a guy selling his fish tank on craigslist, he was moving out of state and couldn't keep him. he had him for 8 years, got him at 3 inches from petsmart. From experience, most aggressive cichlids start banging glass at 6 inches or so.

I like growing them out from small sizes. Your more in control of there diet and water conditions. There are venders on here that could get you a nice size to grow out....maybe start with a 4-6" so you wont have to wait as long. Also if you want a pure Midas your safest bet would be a vender on here IMO

I'm also a fan of growing my fish out from juveniles for the previously stated reasons. It also gives me a sense of pride when the fish reaches adult size and has a stunning look to him/herself.

As far as Midas vs Devil, I'd go Midas, mainly because I like the thicker body and nuchal hump over the slender, streamlined build of the Devil. Either one will make a great wet pet, good luck.

Deciding now between a red devil and a midas, unless I just get a RDxMidas and get the best of both? Not sure if it works like that hahaha.

If it is not a reputable dealer, then it is 99.9% a RDxMidas Mix. And the chains aren't reputable.

They are pretty much the same, just different features. And the Midas get a bigger.

Same here, I hatched the guy in my sig and he turns 2yrs next month. He should be a full potential at 3yrs. :headbang2

Honestly for Quality you could go with several Vendors on here. Jeff Rapps(Tangledupincichlids.com) and Ken Davis(Fishfarm) are the two most reputable. Cichlid Connection is probly right there behind them, but I don't get the whole "San Juan Black" Midas.

If you want color, then here are your options with Max Size.

Amphilophus Citrinellus(Midas) - 14"
Amphilophus Labiatus(Red Devil) - 12"
Amphilophus Xiloaenisis - 8-10"" Jason_S has some of these. Very Midas like in features.
Amphilophus Sagittae - 8-10" Very RD like in features minus the lips.

Honestly for your tank size Xiloaenisis and Saggittae would be awsome. There are Videos of both on the Facebook page I have in my sig. Good luck choosing, with Amphilophus there is no wrong choice.;)
