Best gun for home defense?

Just remember... If you have a dog and a shotgun, when that moment comes, you will most likely lose the dog, too. With a bullet like an ar or a pistol, the dog might stand a chance. But the pattern of a shotgun will most likely take out the bad guy and the dog... Provided the dog is hanging off of the guy. Just something to think about and weigh. Is it ok to you to consider the dog an acceptable loss? In that moment, you can't hesitate because the dog is in the way.

I think a lot of you are a li'l confused about shotgun pattering. Most home defense "shootouts" are usually at a distance of 5 yards or less. A open bore shotgun shooting buckshot has an average spread of around 4 inches at 5 yards. 4 inches isn't much of a spread. Just saying...

I almost guarantee it's not an M4. More likely an AR-15.

It's an m4. She is very short at 5'0 and uses it for her army training. Some special edition operation enduring freedom version she received through her unit after the last deployment. The gun/barrel is smaller than the ar15 judging from pictures as I've never seen an ar15.

The difference between an M4 and an AR15 is internal in the way the weapon works. To someone not into guns and who is not trained, the differences are not readily apparent, in spite of the fact that they make a huge difference in the way it shoots. The difference between an M4 and AR15 has nothing to do with stocking or barrel lengths, either.

And that's exactly why it's not point & shoot with a shotgun. Just a few inches either way, and you're looking at an injured bad guy instead of a dead one; if you're shooting to injure in a legitimate defensive situation, then you shouldn't be shooting at all as the goal is to drop the attacker, not scare/injure them.

I don't follow your logic, friend.

When using a weapon that fires a single projectile, you're trying to place a projectile that is less than a half an inch wide into an area the size of your fist (the heart). It doesn't take very much for an untrained shooter to miss a vital target, especially in the heat of the moment. A handgun certainly isn't point and shoot if you hope to hit a vital organ! You have less than a half inch margin of error to either side, and assuming a half inch projectile, a target that is about ten calibers wide.

If you were to take a 12 gauge and fire it at a bad guy, you have nine pellets of 00 buck going at the bad guy. At 5 yards, with a 5" spread, that means you have a 15 inch margin of error for hitting the heart with a .32 caliber projectile! This also means that your target is less than one caliber wide. Not too shabby! 00 buckshot is also shown to have comparable penetration to a typical 9mm round.

Shoot until there is no longer a threat.... If you dont hit them in the "heart" keep shooting until the bad guy bleeds out. Oh yeah, and train, train, and train some more so that muscle memory will take over in the heat of the moment.
