Best heater??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a fluval "E" series 300w and i like it a lot. spendy though, will be switching to the jager 300 for my next tank as they are half the price and people seem to really like them.

Yep, Ebo with a controller is your best bet.

Every brand of heater has some failures that kill fish or crack. If you have large fish, you might want to go Titanium vs glass or plastic (I like the Stealth plastic), but you can still have the occassional "stuck-on" failure. And you need a heater with the ability to sense when it is in water, or out of water.

The only currently available good way around a "stuck-on" heater is with a heater controller. You plug the heater into the controller after setting it for 3 to 5 degrees above your desired temp. The controller has its own temp sensor, and turns the heater on and off by giving it power, or not giving it power. And, this is supposed to be a good option for high temp tanks, 82 to 86 degrees.

Most controllers only allow plugging in one heater per controller, but Catalina makes a $50 controller that can control up to three heaters, as long as their total wattage does not exceed 800 watts.

The inline heaters can "stick-on" too, and can be controlled with a controller unit.

My titanium heater with built in controller 200 watt was only $30 from a LFS specializing in salt water--not on sale, that's the regular price. I don't know why you would spend more money for a heater that could explode and bust your tank or simply fail and cook your fish.

There you go... 400 watt titanium heater with controller for $32.95. This is not the brand I use, but the design looks exactly the same, down to the details on the controller. I have had mine in my tank for months and it works perfectly.

Can someone please explain to me why anyone would recommend another heater that has been reported to fail by many people when we have options like this?
A titanium heater is not going to explode, and the controller ensures it will never fail and cook your fish.

I have been leaning towards a titanium but there does not seem to be a quality one that multiple people recommend. Also the Ebo Jager is up there. One of the two.....wish there was more feed back on a good dependable titanium brand.
