i just re-read the thread and couldnt find it. could you point it out to me please?

Hunt down the old green Ebo-jagers from the 80's and 90's. Every single one I have came to me filthy and used, I cleaned them, and they've worked like magic. My Via-Aqua was amazing because of the external thermostat and remote sensor, but even though I bought it new it died after five years. These Ebo heaters seem to live forever and hold temps precisely.

My bad, I thought this specified it was a titanium heater. Via-Aqua make a titanium with a external thermostat......

I got an Ebo Jager from a fellow MFKer...have only been using it a week or so but it keeps the most accurate temp I've seen. Most heaters I've had to put a little bit higher to get the temp I wanted, this one is totally accurate. I have it on 79, the temperature is 79. It is glass though, I might look for a guard for it.

I've seen multiple stories on multiple forums regarding the Marineland heaters exploding. I remember one the shards of glass flew through the room, there were pictures.

I think five years is decent anyway! I would probably want to replace something constantly underwater every 5 years or so... I'm sure the heater technology in 5 years will just keep getting cooler (or should I say warmer?) anyway. I blow $30 taking my chick out to the movies, and I like my fish more than her anyway. :grinno:

I agree that 5 years isn't bad.

I still have my first heater for my 65g that I bought in 2005 (Ebo Jager) and I am debating about replacing it soon. even though it will probably go another 5 without issue, I get a little worried.

considering that a new one is relatively cheap (around 40 bucks) I might bite the bullet and replace it.

I have two Ebo Jager 250W heaters and they tend to keep the water warmer than the number on the dial says but they have always been that way, not something that developed over time. I don't go by what the dial number shows, I just go off of my digital temp gauge and make small increments to the dials and the heaters maintain a solid temp and they are over 5 years old.

I still love my Hydor Theo's and always recommend them. I have a 300 watt on my 180 paired with a 300 watt via aqua. I will probably be replacing the via aqua eventually.

Like a few have already stated...all brands have their malfunctions. I've had more issues with the Ebo Jager Heaters than my Stealths. I've had 4 Ebo Jager that failed on me in less than a year a piece while my Stealths are still with me and working fine. I admit that I don't like the fact that there isn't an indicator light to tell me when it's on or off, but I also bought the newer model with the indicator light and it's been running since March with no problems.

Please explain how a titanium heater with a controller will have a malfunction? They aren't going to explode, it's TITANIUM. And they are run on a controller, so they won't cook your fish. Sure, it's possible they might have SOME malfunction, but not those two main concerns that will kill your fish/tank.
