i have used vodka several times, instantanesous. just pur the fish his last drink and plop him in the glass................

I usually have the vodka as I'm dropping the doomed fish into the AST tank.

Sorry you have to do that. It's always hard.

Well, the way i do it (if i have to).

I put the fish in a small container of water, just big enough for it to turn around in.

Then i add 2 Alkaseltzer tablets for each 5-10 gallons of water. This overloads the water with carbon dioxide.
This will cause rapid unconciousness and then death.
Fish should be removed only after ten minutes have passed since their last observed opercular movements (respiration) have occurred.

This works rather well and is very humane. THe fish basically goes to sleep. There is no pain involved.

:bs:

thats basically suffocating

freezing is inhumane as well

typically the fish is wrapped in a wet napkin and place in the freezer and falls "asleep"

little to you know the fish is suffocating to death since it is not emersed in oxygenated water, not to mention its slowly freezing to death.

numb nuts

/just saying

clove oil seems to win the award for most humane

very tough topic. Please give him time to pull through. I found out first hand my fish are survivors. Power outage for 4 full days. no filtration, no food, no heat, no oxygen. temp dropped from 82 to low 50's. when power came back on they were like zombies for half a day and then bounced back. not one of those fish came down with any disease.

if you must help nature along then i hear clove oil is the best method. drs foster and smith sell it on there website. read the description.

EDIT: good luck

Ive tried the freezen method and i will never do that again since to me it seems the fish suffered threw the entire ordeal. Think of ot this way if you were sick with cancer or something else and they dropped you into a frozen lake wouldnt you suffer until you died?

I have used the Vodka/ any other alcohol and to me the fish seem to just slow down then stopped breathing. And I have had to do this a few times. And all the times I have done this there was no splashing or suffering I could notice
