Really? How can you spout "fish ethics" when you are feeding another LIVE fish to your Dempsey. Aren't goldfish...fish? Or is the ethics good only so far up the fishy food chain. And please don't go on about fish eating fish in the wild. The fish isn't in the wild...and they don't eat goldfish where they live.

And for the record, there is a product called Hypno that works well. Oil of clove is fine, but not as quick as the hypno.

You have a vary valid point, as I stated, she never really took to feeders, I do not feed them to her any more. Please understand that when I said ethics, I was referring to a dying fish, that is suffering and there isn't anything left to do but to let it down. As I have stated before, I was.worried that it had a pictus catfishes barb lodged in her throat, and that if it came to that I would need to know how to ethically put her down. Also if feeder goldfish were a matter of ethics I'm sure there would be a lot less stores that sell them.

If you absolutely have to euthanize a fish i wouldn't go about it by freezing it or putting it in ice water. yea they go to sleep or it only takes a few minutes doesn't cut it for me. if you have a shotgun of any guage handy this will take care of the problem VERY quickly and i guarantee you that fish will not feel a thing. I know some of you are probably cringing right now, but lets face it the job will be done.

Well now we know who shouldnt have a gun

I dont have to practice. But your comment is equal to that of a 5 year old with a pellet gun. Not to mention the OP has already said the fish is fine. I vote for the thread be closed

I kno this is irrelevant now but for future reference if you read the subject and can get a just of whats being discussed inside and you dont agree or approve just dont go there this site is about animal husbandry.. Not ethics or putting people down.. Things will be much more efficient that way...

To all who have been saying how "irresponsible I've been, I want you to know that I have had this fish for over a year now, and have never had a problem with it. The reason I wanted to know a good way to euthanize was I thought that it had a pictus catfish's fin barb stuck in it's throat. The JD had been swimming strangely after i netted her and took the remainder of the catfish out. I wasn't going to jump the gun and just kill her, just to know if it came to the point where the fish was so miserable with a barb in her throat that I could painlessly end her suffering. Whats wrong with that? As a hunter and a fisherman, there is always a time where something has come to the point where it is too painful to live on and it's life is needed to be ended. It's called ethics. As for the JD she is fine she has recently colored up quite nicely and is eating great. There is no doubt in my mind that both of the catfishes barbs bade it out of her throat safely.
Cage, I live in NE Iowa, there isn't too much of a selection of LFS that i can access without driving 1+hour. I'm just disappointed that I had to discuss ethics on a fish keeping website.

hay just sayin i for 1 did not think for 1 moment ur irresponsible all u did was ask a question,,silly as it may have been :nilly:...glad ur fish is well.
again tho. oh and 1 of my guppy fry looks kinda sick i might have to put him down, whats the best way, hes two weeks old so i think shooting him would be a job for Thomas Beckett:ROFL:

@The greatest A-hole of all time.... I'm curious does it come naturally or do you have to practice it???

Why are you called Aquamonster and A-hole? hes a great guy thats contributed to the forum in many ways. this whole Topic is retarded and a mod will close it pretty quickly just like the "uneducated oscar keepers" thread was closed. Slickad not only are you affirming negative American stereotypes do you really honestly think someone is going to whip out a gun and shoot their fish ? this is a forum for people who love fish, most of these responces have been about how he shouldn´t be killing it. so why would you go ahead and suggest an even more retarded way of killing it? just try and get taken seriously on here now.

"how do you get your convicts to spawn? well thats easy just shoot a gun right next to them every day until they breed, this will take care of the problem VERY quickly and i guarantee you that fish will not feel a thing"
