I hear you. They aren't for everyone. As suggested above, an Oscar would certainly fit the bill, although they may be a little more common than what you are seeking .

Depends on what you like. It's hard to go wrong with an appropriate sized sa/ca cichlid.

Pair of niger triggers, or even a small school, ours used to shoot jets of water out the tank to let us know they were hungry

Can't really beat an amphilophus male for a wet pet. Wolf fish look like they fit the bill too.
Most CA cichlids, adult males at least, will beg for food etc. if comfortable in the tank.

Are buttis as good as a Midas

Don’t really think I can do salt water as I can’t have a sump

Sumps aren't necessarily required, make a big protein skimmer instead, as they are very easy to make, and add some macroalgae (which look like corals) to eat any excess nutrients in the tank

Most deff are. they dont really have that blind agression when small like most amphs do though. Mine was pretty shy untill about 6". Like dont get me wrong, not like parachromis shy and hiding. Just wasnt in your face trying to eat you. At around 6" i finally gained her trust, and could enter the tank for maitnence and stuff without her hiding. After that mark, its the other way around, and now i have to watch her when i go in the tank so i dont get bit. Hands down, the most intellegent fish i have kept.
