BGK, weird lump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
richy, can't you take him to a vet?

It is possible but what they charge is rediculous so i'd rather try things myself. If it is a tumor then there's not much a vet can do either if it's too far :(
I appreciate your concern though, thanks :)

Hi, well I done a 10 minuite dip with epsom salts on thursday. After about 5 hours back in the tank the lump looked bigger but has subsided back to what the photo's look like on previous pages.
Would doing another dip help and if so how long should I wait inbetween dips?
If nothing has changed within the next 2-3 days then i'll contact a fish specialist and see what they think. I agree it looks like a tumor from photo's I've seen but it may still be a partial blockage as it did react to the epsom salts.
How long between dips?

UPDATE. The lump isn't a tumor, it too soft to be a tumor. I've used a small syringe and removed liquid from it and the swelling has went half down. This was done about 2 days ago and i'm going to do it again, probably tomorrow to remove the rest.
I'm also doing a daily dose of melafix incase it's a bacterial problem but still unsure as to the cause of this weird "swollen" lump.
The fish is still fine, swimming and eating normally etc.

That is great news.
You are much braver than I could be - I could never use a syringe to do that - nor likely hold on to my BGK.

I hope the melfix works.

Be careful that the exudate doesn't get on your skin, some fish diseases can cause terrible skin lesions in humans, too. Since you have now opened the "lump", I hope that your BGK is still in quarantine. Hopefully it will recover with your treatment. I'm curious, is the fluid clear or opaque?

Cmartin, I didn't like doing it either but it had to be done. Not sure if the melafix is doing anything but wont do any harm.

Dmed, I wore surgical gloves and squirted the small amount of liquid into a plastic cup. The liquid was clear and no odour to it.
It has been suggested that it "may" be a kidney problem and lower protein foods may help as it "may" ease the kidneys process load. Still just pressumtions and process of elimination right now.
I'll post back if anything changes over the next few days/weeks.
Cheers :)

I hope it works for you, keep us posted. You can use Pimafix in comination with Melafix if you don't see improvement - I would just use a little less of each.

What are you feeding for the low protein diet?

I worked with a guy that use to keep Chiclids, and his g/f was in training to be a Vet. His fish developed a gouter(sp?) and his G/F suggested giving a dose of iodized salt, this apparently cleared up the condition. The only issue is that I personally never saw the fish. I know its a bit late but it could have helped..
