Bichir “Peaceful” Tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good point, mine are 4” and was thinking of tank mates for mine... Syno prolly a snack... along with the tetras..

African knife I believe are decent size.. 11” or there abouts

The leaf fish 6”-8”
Okay yeah, but are there any more active fish? Thanks have kept knives in the past and they seem to be very reclusive. Also any fast growing fish out there since it would be hard for me to get some large leaf fish and I heard they can take quite a while to grow out

My bichir is a lower jaw that is 12inches long. Wouldn't some of those species be eaten?
Yes and that will soon be 18" and then larger. You need to worry less about tank mates right now and more about a larger tank. The minimum width (front to back) should be 1.5x the length of the fish. So right now you are at that. That fish has the possibility to exceed 18" in the next year. Not sure if you thought about that. With a bigger tank comes more possibilities of tank mates.

fast growing fish tend to be larger fish, and too high of a bioload in a 75g with a large bichir. I would get a 180g if you can't get a larger severum or similar sized fish for the tank.

What did you end up getting and how did it go?
Hey, I ended up with a planted tank so severums and Geophagus were out of the question (dig and eat plant). I decided to add 10 angelfish and they are faring well. I would say anything that is large enough that the bichir can’t get and also not anything with too much personality is okay. I am also considering adding a chocolate Ciclid and an indo tiger datnoid (i would need to upgrade my tank size and probably my get rid of the angelfish) but that would be somewhere in the future. Right now the angelfish don’t bother the bichir and the bichir doesn’t even attack the angels. They’ve laid eggs for me 3 times now and even got some fry from it! Good luck with your tank!

Thank you so much! I have plants too so Ill consider an angel. Im guessing getting a severum with a chill personality would be a gamble anyway
