Bichir + 75 gallons+ tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Iwouldnt bother with the congo tetras, im removing mine as they eat all the food meant for my ornates

there was actually a really interesting acrticle about prety much exactly this setup in AFM this month.

you would also look into momyrids if you're willing to fore-go a knifefish.
i have the ctenopoma/senegalus mix at home they work great together.

I'd try a delhezi over a senegalus. But an African theme would be awesome, use low lights so you see them more often.

I don't really want to start a new thread, so I'll try here first. I also have a 75. It currently has a opaline gourami and a senegal bichir(7 inches). Does anybody have experience with keeping a four-lined pimelodus with a senegal bichir? I was thinking of growing one out a little in a 20 long before adding it. I would also keep multiple hiding spots. My gourami can get a little territorial, but planet catfish seems to think a pim is alright with gouramis.

The sticky about bichir care mentions the Dusky Pimelodid as a possible tank mate. Is that just another name for the four-lined?

I don't know if ropefish are a good idea. They are known to grow more than 3'. They don't need too much space, but a 75 would not suit it for life.

Actually, ropes could live in a 55 for life.
They only get 3' in the wild. They get around 18" in most tanks, and that takes quite a while.

I said for life, they'll be fine in a 75 (certainly not a 55) for a good number of years. But I guarantee that with a good diet and large tank, you can get a rope to grow 30"+.
The last rope i saw for sale was about 16" and it looked fairly young, they have the potential to outgrow tanks of 100 gallons+. (Who wants a 2 foot fish in a 4 foot tank? That would look ridiculous)
