Bichir Bichir

For pics, try fishbase. There is another thread trying to track down P. bichir, but nobody has found em yet. The closest I know available in the US is P. ansorgii.

by "closest".... if you mean rarity in the trade, i will have to agree. but for "closest" in looks, the nigerian lapradei can look very similar in color to a bichir bichir.

I bet sooner or later this year there will be PBB presented in US.

Well I was thinking in size as well.. maybe P. congicus beats P. ansorgii there? Anyway one mfk member in cali sold an ansorgii to his lfs within the past few months, so at least we know they have been around.

no...not that i'm aware of. japan is the only place that has the real thing as far as i know (a few may have been exported out not long ago, i'm not entirely sure). other places claim to have bichir bichir, but after seeing pics, they all turn out to be guinea lapradei (and occasionally nigerian lap). And Pbb actually enters the hobby 4 years or so BEFORE ansorgii and teugelsi.

its been my dream bichir for many years, back when ansorgii was still THE holy grail (for close to a century, only a few pickled museum specimens of ansorgii were known to the hobby/scientific community...talk about RARE). But the way bichir bichir looks has always captivated me!!

Ashdavid has some older pictures of his bichir bichir. You should ask him if he can show you pics. He should be taking some newer pics of it soon.

I was gonna try and bring 1 back from my trip to Japan back in Nov until I calculated the yen to dollar ratio. there was no way I was gonna spend 2Gs on a 8" specimen:nilly::nilly::nilly::nilly:
