Bichir setup questions

I have a question. Do you all think that if I used my filtered water I would be able to put the bichirs in sooner?

Bichirs are super hardy. As for substrate, just don’t use pea pebbles. Probably most common bichir substrate is red garnet sand, 36 grit

Where do you get red garnet sand?

Tractor supply store…my trusted LFS has it (If you are in Southern socal, Aquarium Fish Depot and Pet Kingdom have it).

Got two Senegal bichirs. And I was wondering how often do you all feed baby bichirs?

You can order it from Tractor supply and have it delivered if none near you. You can feed 2 or 3 small feeding a day while small and cut back to 1 a day when older.

I feed my big bichirs once every 2 days. 2-3 times per day is good for small bichirs. It’s important to not overfeed because bichirs can stomach pack.

I was doing research on bichirs and learned about a congicus bichir. I now want to eventually own one. I was wondering how many gallons I would need to house one of these giants.

I've found that to get a rough estimate of how big the tank should be is to double whatever the tank size the internet says and that would be closer to accurate (at least by the standards of most here on MFK lol)
