  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a decomposing bichir right now, that skull looks sick, I never knew they had multiple rows of teeth, can't wait to be able to dig him up and have a look.

Thats a great skull pic Simon, one of yours?

Pic of a jaw bone from a lap that crawled into a pipe and was basically turned to soup once removed from the tank and left out....

I wish I would have known it was there, and I would have saved the full skull but I was more concerned with the foul odor it created.

Cohazzard, what is the purpose of the splenial bone?, the only thing I can find is this simplistic definition:

The splenial is a small bone in the lower jaw of reptiles, amphibians and birds, usually located on the lingual side (closest to the tongue) between the angular and suprangular.

We should get a thread going with birchir teeth pics. Once my guy is fully decomposed I will post a pic of him.

I'm not sure, perhaps it aids in grip, or as an attachment place for muscles. I shoudn't even be on here right now, we're busy at work but I can look into it when I get home.

The paper I posted has the explanation if you have time to read through that paragraph and look up definitions lol

not sure if he'll appreciate that much, let us know how it works out :)

Cohazzard, don't get fired for me :) I sometimes chuckle how thankful I am that my bosses are not into fish keeping (i.e a member on this website) I would have some creative explaining to do.

I did try to read through the maxillary section, I think I might more confused since reading it, or at least I have more questions. One in particular was the function of the splenial bone. I will try to research more later as I am also at work

Awesome pic SimonL thanks! Perfectly shows the single row of teeth and the splenial bone behind it wich almost looks like a secodn row of teeth, but isn't.

Dude a splenial is not a set of teeth look a like that what you see.

Here is a pic of a splenial bone (Not from a bichir though). Spenlial bone are found in the inner side of the lower mandible.

There was a same topic of this before in AP and I'm trying to look for it. I'm trying to dig out some info that I've read before that they have more than a single row of teeth.

I would love to read that.
