big cat refusing to eat

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hmmmm, after doing conversion of the F to C. 74F comes out to 23C. What the water temperature from the water main? imo 23C is quite low already (my pim is quite sluggish/fasting at that temperature .... and yes, it gets colder than 23C in Laos ... errr my previous arapaimas perished at 19C last winter). i would think that the water from the public main could be lower temp than air temp (if that is the case, then there is temp fluctuation in your tank - fish generally do not like that i think. that's why i asked about water changes with relation to temperature.

well, like I said, the tanks at room temp, and honestly for the past 15yrs I've not used heaters. In my hubby's tank, he does use one and only had one bad experience, but it was with an older heater. I did try using heaters, brand new ones this past winter for my 125g (only place to put the tank was in front of a window). Freaking things one day didn't shut off. had the temp set on 70*, and keep going at 80*....I only noticed as my rtc x tsn was hoovering at the top of the water...took them out, did water change, added more airation, didn't lose anybody...

I'm not concerned about warming the water as I've had the achara for two years now, and never a problem, till now...but, I do try to match the water changes with that of the original tank...

but, I know raising the water will increase his metabolism which will get him to eat more...but, that's a lot of heaters needed for that tank, and things could go wrong...

and, as an update, he did eat 2 days in a row...didn't eat last night, but night before ate 2 nightcrawlers, and night before that was some sinking tablets...so, hopefully all the water changes helped...

valuable lesson learned...do NOT neglect water changes even when life gets too hectic....think we're going to replace the hoses going into the sump as I don't like what I see growing in there.

Strange how attached you get to one specific fish..

I'm in a similar, but much further along situtation. My 26.5" hybrid refuses to eat and it's been 2 months. I'm going to order a red rubber catheter today to syringe feed him internal parasite medication. This is NOT going to be easy even with my training on how to place gastric tubes on animals. I'm guessing fill and lube up giant catheter, burrito wrap catfish in towel, hand off to husband to restrain, open mouth and prop open with large pcv pipe, insert catheter (possibly using a hooked wire coat hanger inside catheter to make it more ridgid), pray I get past that syphincter in the back of the throat, inject medication, and beg him not to vomit. If your guy gets worse, I'll let you know how this goes.

For right now, my suggestion would be to order Gel Tek Ultra Cure Px and inject the live worms with it. I've done that successfully with my eels before. I feel terrible for the worm, but it works great. I believe you can get syringes and needles from kvvet.com.

Hopefully, we end up swapping success stories.

hey, long time we haven't shared stories on here, but, wow...you're going thru something similar...wonder why...I haven't added anybody new into that tank for quite some time, but the equipment is inter-usable between tanks. Did you introduce anybody new? Is your tsn x rtc spitting out the food too, when he is interested or acting hungry? I too thought about mushing up, um, worms and syringing them down his throat, but, well...you telll me how that one goes, esp as our fish are the same size.

I had to check about your hybrid, as I couldn't remember if that was the one your were talking about, as a couple months ago I rember you had your eye on snookn21's "achara/tsn" hybrid...didn't know if you got one...then I noticed we have a lot of the same fish :grinno: oh, my giraffe cat grew, but not as fast or as much as I anticipated...

Later on today, I'm gonna try taking a video of kitty fish's weird behavior.

between fungus, mold growing on an old cucumber, mosquitos, pink/light tan patches on inlet tube to sump, low ph combined with the eating behaviors..I've neglected the other tanks some. And, I have a situation going on with my flowerhorn...a "cyst" that burst the other month, never healed. makes me wonder if there is a parasite...or fish tb...

Yeah, I would keep up on those daily water changes you've been doing until you can get your water back up. Also, if you can stomach it and the fish will accept it, I highly recommend the medication injected, live worm.

I decided that I will sedate my hybrid to administer the medication. I just think the risk of injury to all parties involved will be too great. I'm working on getting as much info as possible before I do this. I'll LYK.

quick update, over this past weekend kitty fish started eating normally again. He still spits out food every once in awhile, but he's eating...and his colors have really come out on his fins, all of them. He has a lot of gold spots, not real bright, but wasn't noticable before.

So, kitty's back to normal, for the most part...thank god...

Thats good.
Water changes are great medication.
The cloudy eyes on the big one, and the cloudy eyes along with deteorating whiskers on the other one, lead me to believe that water issues were your main problem. Pim cats are very sensitive to high nitrates, and their whiskers will detiorate in those conditions.
Glad he's doing well.
Just remember. The solution to pollution is dillution.

Well, looks like were back to have two happy kitties. My big guy suddenly just started eating again! I'm easing him back into. No gorging like I'm sure he'd like to. I don't want him plugging up those newly refunctioning pipes. I'm not sure what did it. I did do one last final dose of prazipro, and then did very large water changes (80% since I make my water and matching everything before it goes in) 3+ times a week. Still not sure if anything I did actually fixed him, but I don't care. He's on his way back after almost 3 months of not eating. Apparently, I yelled so loud when I saw him eat my husband would in the house was going to come out to the detatchef garage to make sure everything was okay, but stopped as he saw me running and leaping into the house rattling on about the good news. Didn't realize how attached I was to my hybrid! I'm so glad I didn't have to do any extreme measures.

Not too often you get stories of sick fish with happy endings.
