Big Collection Trip

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
should read the south florida fishing thread there are alot of good spots talked about :)

You have a link?

established sponge filters will help.

I have a fair amount of these...just need to get some more battery airpumps now.

Fleshy what is your job? Just curious.

Ha if I told you that Id have to well...you know the drill.

Right now my target species aside from the gars is going to be Elassoma okefenokee...going to try and bring back a mess and breed them.

Non natives are also going to be of interest.

What does everyone thing of the use of breather bags - especially for the small guys like Elassoma? Anyone on here ever used the breather bags?

depending on the amount of time you will have the fish in a "holding tank" i would say just some reg bags would do fine for the trip back. i would recomend using coolers as temp housing till you are ready to go then just bag them up like you would to ship just for ease of travel. that's how i plan to do it.

i also pm'd you on the trip.

Thanks and yea, coolers with airstones looks to be the holding technique...and then maybe bags for the ride back.

Super excited for this.

Double post...but here is a list of things that I would love to bring back alive:

(All fish on the smaller size for ease of transport and to grow out)

American Eel
Bowfin
Shortnose Gar
Okefenokee Sunfish

(These last three would be cool, but not as important as the ones above)
Bluefin Killiefish
Bluenose shiner
Florida Flagfish

Open to other cool native suggestions as well...and still looking for locations guys!

In addition to that I will be looking to lay my hands on anything non native as well.

I already have long nose, florida, and aligator gars...apparently there is a lake with all "gold" FL gars...if possible and legal I might try to find this place and get one.

Be sure to bring extra batteries for the aerators and change said batteries regularly. I lost all of those fish that I told you about earlier after the batteries died on my aerator while in transit; only the one other little fish and some invertebrates made it through the period of time (maybe two hours) when the batteries were dead.

Why not use a small cheap inverter to run a real a/c air pump in the vehicle ? That's what I do for longer hold times. This way yu can plug the same pump into an outlet at night.

Done if we go the battery powered route.

I have one of these - wonder how fast it would kill the battery.

That would be lousy if we ended up loosing the fish and the car that way haha.

Looking for any non-native non cichlid fish as well.

Tilapia are also added tomy list.

Native focus is on spotted gars, american eel, bowfin, okefenokee sunfish, sturgeon of any sort.
