Hello,
I love aquariums, I have helped my dad with his 125 gallon when I was younger than 10 years old. He use to own African cichlids, South American cichlids, angel fish, and even rope fish. When I turned 12 he bought me my own 65 gallon aquarium and I did a South American biotope (not a super strict biotope) I owned parrot fish, firemouth, and black convict cichlids, and Dino bichirs ( from africa.. I know). I spent a lot of time and money into it. I was to the point of buying me a teacup stingray. Then one day I'm sad to say I had to sell it and I haven't had an aquarium since.
But my big dream I have is to put a monster tank in my living room. May sound crazy but money, and time is no issue. I'm going to take a few years and plan everything out until its perfect. I just need some help. I've been really going back and forth on a few things.

1. Salt Water or Fresh Water
I have no experience in saltwater but I really like the color of the fish. It's nothing like freshwater

2. If I go with salt water what do I need to know? I understand salt levels and little different mechanical figures in the filtration system from reading here and there.. but just because you've read something doesn't make you an expert.

3. If I do salt water I want some exotic fish. Like cuttlefish, sharks, rays, eels, and many more. But like freshwater you can't just throw fish together and expect them to get along.

4. The problem with salt water is there are venomous and poisonous creatures. Which I don't mind but I would like a list so I can be careful. The last thing I want is to die in my fishtank because I was unaware that fish over there could kill me.

As you may have noticed I literally have no experience with salt water some of you may recommend me to start off with a smaller tank and I plan to.
Another note : I'm still designing how big my tank will be but I plan to have something around 10,000 gallons and maybe even bigger. Everything will be running off of a computer and have a backup generator in case of power outages. Also the filtration will be custom made.

Thank you guys for taking the time and answering my questions I really appreciate it.

You said money is not an issue then best is hire a professional builder and design your 10000 gallons saltwater tank if you have no experiences in saltwater and in large scale project, even if you stick with freshwater I still advise to hire a professional builder. These project is not something you can handle on your own, it will take years of experience, knowledge to built a large scale project. About species knowledge you can abuse google, books and read, read...and more reading. We can answer pretty much all your questions but your own knowledge is best for long run.
Edit:
You can search and sum up all species that you want to keep and show that to a professional builder then they can focus to built the tank around those species.

Sorry I didn't it and my phone didn't post all of my question's on there for some reason. Im getting that fixed now.

What are your questions? MFK is predominantly composed of fresh water fish keepers. There is a small salt water forum which might be better suited to questions you might have.

There are more people able to answer questions on marine topics on Reef Central.

words of wisdom worthy of following, good luck and make sure you post your project for us to live vicariously through! :)

Thanks guys
Like I said I'm going to take a couple of years to research because 10,000 gallons is a lot of water! Also I will hopefully form some better questions. But I will post every step of the way and keep you guys informed on this project.

If you serious into this hobby especially saltwater, you can start setup a 125G or 180G reef tank, while cycling the tank you can sum up species you're interest and show us, then we can start discuss the pros and cons. I recommend saltwater setup because you pretty much have access to all fish, coral species, while fresh water setup you might have limited selection depend on where you live.

Not trying to be a jerk but I would ask you to seriously think about what you are going to be asking and do lots of searching on this site. Some folks don't take kindly to the most basic stuff being asked again and again.

Many people on this site know what a daunting task it is to setup a 10,000g tank, and there is a lot of skepticism around folks that are brand new and their very first post is about a 10K tank when they havent owned a fish tank since they were 12. Too many "spammers" in the past have created threads like this with no follow through. Good luck on your endeavor :)

Lol I knew someone was going to say that. Trust me I hate trolls as much as you and I was a bit nervous to post something of this size for my first post but that was the whole reason for getting on monsterfish keepers.

My only issue would be that you are asking about stock before you even think about planning the tank? You are going about this backwards. May want to set some priorities as something like this is no joke as in if something goes wrong that kind of water could and probably would destroy a house. Knowing which fish you can keep together is pretty meaningless at this point other than if you know you want a shark then you can plan dimensions around that, stock list with a shark can come MUCH later :)
