Big fish are BACK

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree with you that well landscaped tanks are beautiful. For my fish bare undecorated tanks are a must for their health and safety. I even gave away a custom made 15' x 4' rocky background that I was going to put on the floor because the risk of inury to our fish was too great. When my tank is finally set up, I will not be posting pics of it on this forum. I do not need "your tank is ugly" "I don't like your background, it's unnatural looking" comments.. especially not after all the time, effort money, blood, sweat, tears I've thrown into this project.
I knew that feeling LOL
9 out of 10 of my family members will say my tanks are nice, best they have ever seen before but there is still 1 person complaint about it LOL I usually ignore them cause I don't take comment from a person never own aquarium in their life...Most likely they have to complaint or say something cause of jealousy! :P

The concept of taking the good with the bad still exists and of course everyone does not like the same fish, tank decor or stocking levels around the forum.Blatant insults are one thing but a little criticism isn't such a bad thing. It'd be pretty boring if all everyone did was gush over one another's photos.....all we'd see is,"dude, nice tank!"posts lol.
.....as for family members and house guests,I don't even bring them into my fishroom if they already are not into aquarium fish. It's better just to avoid the stupid questions as they always seem to mostly be interested in how much every fish and tank costs.

Criticism is a part of life. I know everyone will not like my tanks and that's okay. I share for the ones that do. At the end of the day the only opinion that counts when it comes to my tanks is my own so if there's a few negative comments out there, does it really matter?

I'll stick with dimunitive fish till I can afford a large tank, I only have 140 gallons of tanks in total but I would like to be a part of this community.

Some criticism is valid, and I'm using that to try and provide better for my fish

What's wrong with keeping ones negative comments to himself/herself? They really serve no useful purpose. The pompous ***$ critical atmosphere stinks. Unless people are asking for advise or critiquing, don't give any.

And to be perfectly honest criticism is needed, there's been a few times I've set something up to just get negative feedback due to something I missed. Without the negative feedback I would not catch this or that and correct it to make it right. A perfect example being my new frontosa setup. My son wanted a natural lake theme so we added some driftwood along with the natural stone. Someone pointed out that driftwood didn't fit in and the frontosa could injure themselves on it. I didn't take it offensively, just as constructive criticism and took the driftwood out and the tank is better off for it. Now the straight up rude comments, well obviously the society we live in is less than polite so you just ignore those people. That kind of stuff means nothing to me.

The internet and sites like MFK. Truth is when I first started keeping fish we just went on what the LFS said. This was back in the 90's. "Tiger shovelnose and oscars are fine in 55 gallon along with arrowana" Once the internet became big and interest groups like MFK rolled out, people could share ideas. People learned from others how to build giant plywood tanks, plumb massive filter systems, learn about big fish behavior and feeding, and so on. They also learned ethics. Once people began sharing pics online of their monster fish in monster tanks, others wanted to experience the same. Now thanks to the internet and MFK, these people have an idea about how to go about it.

That's not criticism. That's helpful information. Saying I don't like your tank set up is completely pointless

What's the point of being on a forum then? Criticism is there to HELP you get better and improve. I see it as the same as basic laws that are in place by the system to ensure people who are not smart enough to realize something is wrong, it is therefore labelled as "unlawful" to HELP people not make those mistakes, or see it as a helpful guideline to better yourself. For example if you litter and get a fine for it, chances are much slimmer you will not do it again.
I don't think she's referring to constructive criticism...

She's more focused on the people who bash others about the fish they keep, because they don't like the way it looks, acts, costs, etc... From what I've seen, this happens a lot to people who own Blood Parrots, Genetically modified fish, or other controversial hybrids.

The reality of all this is there are so few people that are able to properly home fish in the OP's linked article that it does take others to stand up and say you know what, you probably shouldn't keep that RTC, GATF, aro and goonch all in a 125 gallon....And if there's a few rude comments here or there to Franks point, seriously, that bothers you that much? To quote Monday night football "'Cmon Man!". I manage 50+ associates at work, if I let every little negative comment about me bother me I'd probably hang myself and that's people I interact with every day face to face. If some random Joe Schmoe on the internet has something rude to say to me....really?!? This is the world we live in, it's not going to change with this generation so why let it bring you down? I'm probably just rambling at this point so I'll shut up now ;)
