Big fish are BACK

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The reality of all this is there are so few people that are able to properly home fish in the OP's linked article that it does take others to stand up and say you know what, you probably shouldn't keep that RTC, GATF, aro and goonch all in a 125 gallon....And if there's a few rude comments here or there to Franks point, seriously, that bothers you that much? To quote Monday night football "'Cmon Man!". I manage 50+ associates at work, if I let every little negative comment about me bother me I'd probably hang myself and that's people I interact with every day face to face. If some random Joe Schmoe on the internet has something rude to say to me....really?!? This is the world we live in, it's not going to change with this generation so why let it bring you down? I'm probably just rambling at this point so I'll shut up now ;)
I think we're all agreeing to some extent or another and I own a construction company with 100 plus employees. Trust me dude your office guys don't have **** on what they have to say about me lol

For some reason I can't get worked up about the fact that stores sell monster fish to anyone who has cash. Since most of these fish have already lived longer than the majority of wild fish, it doesn't get my moral compass spinning. If a person does not put some effort into keeping these fish, then they will fail. Even if they do it "right" they still may fail. At some point I would like another dovii, some rays, tsn, maybe an arowana so I have no interest in seeing them disappear from the hobby. I will reserve my outrage for the destruction of natural habitats, and overfishing or exploitation of endangered species but not for an overstocked fish tank.

are people really that concerned with what others think or have to say? I personally could care less what people think of me. And i just find it disturbing that people are so bothered by what someone who they dont even know and most likely will never meet will say about them. i post my pics for those who want to see them and those who dont and want to bash, bash away!! if you want to say negative things go ahead, i dont let it get to me, if i enjoy my tank thats all that matters.. enough of my derail of this already derailed thread... back to the OP.

from what i have read in that article, the writer seems to me to a bit of an activist. whats the next article? no more public aquariums cause according to him even they dont have the proper tanks to house the big fish they keep.. i guess zoos will be next. does anyone honestly think that a 10,000 gal tank is enough to keep a whale? does this mean it is unhappy or unhealthy? or not properly taken care of? no matter what you are keeping, from fish to reptiles to mammals no one could possibly give them the proper housing that mother nature can give them. all we can do is give them the best that we can and if some one doesnt like it then they can go screw themselves, be negative and live a miserable life. Myself on the other hand does not and will not let the nay sayers get the best of me.

What's wrong with keeping ones negative comments to himself/herself? They really serve no useful purpose. The pompous ***$ critical atmosphere stinks. Unless people are asking for advise or critiquing, don't give any.

This is my problem with it as well. If we present our negative comments in such a unproductive light what's the point. The owner feels as if they wasted time, the poster shouldn't get joy out of it, and we all waste our time reading it. Nothing worthwhile comes out of comments like that. That said jealousy compels us all to some extent...

We all have different ideals and focus when it comes to fish keeping. When people take the time to acknowledge a difference in opinion (tastes, something extremely subjective) and post negative stuff anyway I can't help but scratch my head.

exactly my point but much better articulated. Negative pointless comments are useless and a waste of everyone's time. Constructive critisism is akin to advice and should always be welcome Should you get upset and lose any sleep over someone saying anything negative ?Hell effin no

I agree with you that well landscaped tanks are beautiful. For my fish bare undecorated tanks are a must for their health and safety. I even gave away a custom made 15' x 4' rocky background that I was going to put on the floor because the risk of inury to our fish was too great. When my tank is finally set up, I will not be posting pics of it on this forum. I do not need "your tank is ugly" "I don't like your background, it's unnatural looking" comments.. especially not after all the time, effort money, blood, sweat, tears I've thrown into this project.
Well please message me some pics and updates! I've followed your build through construction troubles of the room, plumbing questions, background painting, "poop suckers" , etc. Even though we've never met I feel like I know you and the build, and am excited for you to get it completed. I think many of us are passionate about our hobby. Unfortunately our neighbors and relatives are not. We come here to meet others with like interests. Please continue sharing!!! Unfortunately the internet brings crappy people who want to complain, bash or whatever. For lack of a better word EF them! Keep sharing posts and pics for all the fans (there are a lot), and forget the others...

Back to the original topic...

I would say now a days there are probably less people getting into fish keeping overall, but those that are serious are willing to go to reasonable lengths to make sure they give their fish what they need...

I mean as the article kind of mentioned, if you are going to be buying an expensive fish, chances are you've done at least some research...

And most people who get into these larger exotics such as rays, tiger fish etc, i would think and hope know what would be a reasonable min. Tank size for said fish, and heck, im sure at certain shops they can see what larger fish of certain species look like...

I think it's the more common inexpensive species of fish that create the problem. The $10 to $30 dovii, pacu, tsn, gar, etc....If you have to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for a fish, I imagine you probably have the ability to house it.

Fat Homer, the problem being is that in the long run pet stores are a business and they will do what is necessary to be profitable. Many of them do not even know the fish they are selling. For instance I recently bought a "shovelnose catfish" I knew it wasn't a tsn but they didn't.

Dont get me wrong, living over here i know all too well its about moving fish, but at the same time, with so many stores on fish street here, you can see quite a few large 3-4' fish, including SB RTC (although they could possibly be stunted)...

So my point being, the consumer can (if they shop around) see that same cute cheap fish for $5 and 2" in one store, while down the road is the same species at 3-4' long in a display tank...
