Bio Spira does not work

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Can you answer the questions? These are very important things if you want to figure out what is wrong.

FYI, at the LFS I use to work at we had UGF's in, but they were not running. We had a central overflow system that was a huge sump. Might want to verify that the UGF's are the intended method of filtration at the store.

How can there be no nitrate, nitrate doesn't dissapear. IMO there is something up with your tank.

Well I can vouch that it does work. I cycled my 75 in a lil more than a week using bio and the fishless method and im gonna use it again when i get my new tank.(i had carbon in my canisters). My readings have been very steady so far ,0 ammonia 0 nitrite and between 5-10ppm nitrate

In my experience, bacteria products work fine.

Yes, the store does not have a complicated system and only use the undergravel system..So this is what I am going to do..I am going to not do water changes for a while, maybe in one month I will..I want to see nitrites show up and stay there...I was thinking foolishly today again..I was going to take the gamble and buy a smaller packet of Bio Spira but I came to my senses...

let me tell you that even without a bio jump starter like bio-spira your tank should have been cycled. In a months time you should have nitrite and nitrate. Somthing else is wrong. I would check your test kits for accuracy.

Something is wrong..It has been 4.5 weeks in cycling and my water is after a water change:

Ammonia 1
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0

It has no nitrates, and nitrite after one month..Filters are undergravel filter with powerheads, internal fluval filter and a wisper power filter..Cycling with fishes and not overstocked, inch per gallon rule I go by...Now I should have at least .25 nitrites now then I would be happy but I have ZERO..

I use Amquel and Novaqua to condition the water!

this could be a problem as well. Amquel and other ammonia removers actually can kill bacteria. I would get just a straight chlorine remover a.d stick with that. By using amquel you are in a sense changing the form of ammonia to ammonium. Stop usig amquel as a chlorine remover.

Yea, I asked the LFS guy about this..I wanted to get my money back from Bio Spira but he told me that the Bio Spira wiped out my nitrites...Maybe he does not know what he is talking about but that is what he told me..So in short, maybe Bio Spira prolonged my cycle?

not a chance. it contains both bacterias for converting ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate. there is no possibility that it prolonged your cycle. It will wipe out nitrites by converting them to nitrates and thats what you want.
