Black arowana temper?

I see...how would an ornate fare with koi? My koi are all pretty fat and big already. They also have a pretty fast growth rate for the first 1-2 years. Would the ornate go after them? My largest koi is closing in on 8 inches and I've only had it for about 2 months. I got it at about 6 inches. All the other koi are 5-6 inches. Very bulky and fat.

Kois get way too big and are pond fishes. Koi and ornates have way too different of temperature ranges.

I'm not raising the koi for life in the tank, I'm actually just growing them out for someone until the person finishes his pond. I don't know when that'll be... I've also seen Jardini + Clown loaches work. I've even read about it here on MFK a few times. I've already split up the black and jardini... Jack dempseys are growing out for my red parrots. When I first placed them in they were being pecked. Looks like I'm going to end up having to sell and give some of these fish away.

Ornates [and bichirs in general] are fine with fish they can't swallow. They do have deceptively large mouths though, and when hungry can fit pretty big fish in there as I found out when I went away for a week and came back to find a good sized female heckelii missing.

IMO your best bet would be to get rid of the jardini and either the ornate or the clowns and cichlids and grow the black plus others out for your 180g. Once the black is a bit bigger and settles in the 180g you can look for other appropriately sized tankmates. There's no reason CLs won't work, but they do grow very slowly compared to fish like ornates or arowana, so starting with 2"ers isn't a good idea. Maybe look for some larger ones online.
