Black EBJD? Or a Hybrid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It is a hybrid. There is no telling what is in him. By the way EBJD are not purbred.

Remember that for the most part, everyone who reponds is guessing and is basing their opinion on prior experience or some other post they have read before. In my own personal experience, when I housed my EBJDs on a dark substrate, they looked quite similar to yours. Even in a brightly lit planted tank, when under 3" my EBJD would vary color significantly from bright blue to a black/blue mix. I have found that as they continue to grow past the 3" mark, the colors become more consistantly blue. I am by far no expert and am basing my opinion on the five EBJD I currently have and the five that I no longer own.

my dempsey is very dark all the time, i have had him since he was a little tike, he is now close to 6 inches long and i have had no problems, he is real shy and number two in the tank, but stays black all the time and very colorful. the fish you have looks unique hope it survives that should turn out to be one nice fish. post more pics as he/she grows

There not hybrids.....

i have seen several that were like that all were just ebjd as they get older the color will change just like any other cichlid. tht is the norm

that is one great looking EBJD, it almost looks like a normal JD when they get dark. I want one of these for my 55, they look awesome as adults also. Goodluck with it!

Might be an electric blue based on how much color he has on the fins. I'm wondering, do the EBJDs have the red on the dorsal fin? I know the regular ones do.... He might be so dark because he is matching the color of the black substrate. Sometimes fish do that, try to match the shade of the surroundings.... eating is a good sign though for a healthy fish
