Ahh... no.... Fish do not die for no reason. People only say that if you can't find a reason, but there is always a key factor to why fish die unexpectedly. You should remember that instead of scratching your head each time one of your armatus die.

And just for info , some characins are some of the hardiest fish around so lumping them into one group is not wise.

I made some mistakes. Thank you for pointing them out. I should have clarified. My Armatus died due to improper care on my part. I have no problem admitting that, I may not know EXACTLY why on every one of them, but that is irrelevant..... The fact is IF I was able to care for them properly I'd still have them.

And yes, there's a huge difference in some Characins like Silver Dollars and the likes of Hydrolycus or Hydrocynus.

You should keep a diary of water parameters, temp ect. Also watch there tank mates, some fish are very susceptible to stress. Anyway goodluck with those armatus in the future.:)

Very good advice... Thank you.

Along with that I think when/if I do decide to try them again I know for next time that they MUST be a good size larger than any rays in the tank. Over 3/4 of the Armatus I lost were due to rays killing them.....

I'm interested to see if one of these Black Tigers STAY black in a tank.... Or if they are like "Blue" Motoros that quickly loose thier color when taken from thier natural enviroment.

In my previous experiences, tiger fish of any species over 12" are very difficult to ship, and most likely will not make it from Africa. Out of all the tigers I've imported, most specimens over 8" come in DEAD, only smaller ones survive, hope this info. is useful.

On the good news. My importer has listed 2 more tigers which are not available yet, but will be next season, about the end of this year.

Hydrocynus vittatus "Chad lake" very rare
Hydrocynus sp. forskalli very rare

these are not the same as the ones from Nigeria he says. We'll have to wait and see.

dont' know, could be the same thing, or could be a different species they just don't know what scientific name to tack on.

this is part of the risk of importing fish I think most people do not realize. Lake Chad is a lake that is drying up, lost over 70% of its volume in the past decade, there are a few rivers that feed the lake, so it could be something completely unique. and fish are normally not collected from that region or exported. people there are very poor and food scarce. pretty sad place...

but some of the largest bichirs also come from there too...

So far I think I keep atleast 3 type of ATF b4. GATF , VATF and FATF.
I am known as zeroneox in other forum. :) It always interesting to read up about your post.
