Black Ghost Knifefish Tankmates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just got my new tank set up and am about to move the fish in later tonite, has anybody ever kept a needle nose gar with a bgk? and im going to get some flagtails tomm i think

IMO if you want to have it with cichlids, you should have more than one cichid so that there aggression is geared towards eachother rather than the BGK that looks completely different from them. I currently have a juvenile(4") one in a 55 growout with alot of other fish such as: Geo, Firemouth, Green Severum, Acei Cichlid, Tiger Oscar, Female Jack (I dont reccomend jacks though she is the domant fish and is sometime aggressive although never to the BGK), Senegal Bichir, Pictus Cat, African Featherfin Cat and 4 tinfoil barbs. None of them care about the BGK at all which I contribute to "the weird factor". I think the only fish that even knows it exists is the senegal bichir which like to swim with my BGK at night (really he's following behind him as my BGK looks for food snatching up anything left behind).

They've been together for only about 2 months through. On a side note I had my adult male jack(8") in the tank with these guys seperated by a divider for about 2 days. The BGK would somehow get on the Jacks side of the tank and didnt eat him or even hurt him, the 2 plecos that did the same didnt fare so well.

when i used to work at the store we would usually recommend (finish reading before you go crazy and tell me im wrong i already know) angels, discus, osacrs, red tail cats, tin foil barbs, any tetras, any puffers, pictus, columbian sharks, iridescent sharks, and corys, and any barbs, or any of the rainbows, and most cichlids were ok. after actually learning i learned some loaches, angels, rainbows (but only the larger ones like tuquiose, boesmani, and red) the larger corys, and few cichlids. i know people have had success with some of the others but i would only recommend those with caution. also learned NEVER mix with pictus columbians, or iridescents as those prefer more brackish water or water with marine salt content and BGKs dont tolerate that well. i eventually "quit" because my information on compatability didnt sell fish well enough. to this day people still come in and ask for me and call for me.

I have had very good success over a 3 year period with a shoal of elephantnose in with my BGK. They share a 144 gallon tank. I also have a couple of plecos, a whiptail cat, some bogwood and a lot of large rocks. I had a few threadfin rainbows in the tank the first 2 years The 11" to 12" BGK hides in the rocks and comes out in the ambient lighting to eat. He also eats snails so I keep some in the tank with him (I don't know if this is a common species trait or not).

my BGK lives with bichers and orino pbass. my big one had lived with a clown knife, silver arowana, various pbass and a stupid hybrid catfish successfully until i put them in the 210 and introduced snooks to the mix.

Wanted to know how big the BGK and Clown Knifes were?
I might want to save this large clown knife at my lfs. Just don't want any problems with this new BGK i am getting.

Cool do you have many pipes for hiding? How long have they been living together? Would like to check some pics of your set up man.

I've got my BGK in with gold severums, EBJD, clown loaches, and a gibby. They're all super happy and friendly with each other. The severums are only aggressive towards their species. I've also got driftwood and colorful plants to add extra color. I have some pics in my album but I'll post some here, too.

hi there i have had mine in with clown loaches, silver dollars, angels.lace gourami all got on fine. whaen feeding i put on a lamp next to the tank so to created a moonlight effect and you can what them, theyr'e eyes go a little red and when they shuffle backwards vertically ,thats hunting mode! watch their mouths closely and when they really open it ,it's like watching the mummy movie.
in time they will greet you when you approach the tank. like a submissive puppy who wants a tickle they are really lovable.
