yea jd can very from light tan to a dark blue/black color my first big fish like 17-18 years ago was a mean black jack. there is a very nice pic of a black jack in the dr axelrod mimi atlas. i think they are harder to find after the years and years of tank breeding. i say if you can find them now be happy. may be reaching with this last part but i always wonder if those black jd have something to do with the blue and blue gene jd

Wow he is stunning how big is he because my JD is acting the exact same as this one. I also got a "black jack" a female thats about 2 inches it was ligth colored when i bought it but changed colors after i released her into my 60g grow out tank with my texas and nicaraguense.
 
i have a few juvies that are black always ..... i got them that way from the lfs too
there in a big tank to themselfs and stay black ...
